Animal Testing Alternatives

Do your
part!

In Vitro Testing
* Chips that contain grown human cell which mimic
the structure and function(s) of human organs and
organ systems. They can act as an alternative to
using animals for various types of research, such as
disease research, drug & toxicity testing.
Human-Patient Simulators
* Life-like computerized human patient simulators
that act as a human patient. They have the ability to
give the correct biological responses to medical
interventions.

to put an END to these practices!

Reconstituted Human Epidermis/EPISKIN

* A 3-dimensional model formed from human skin
cells. This can act as an alternative for rabbits that
are typically used in experiments that are used to
evaluate chemicals for the ability to corrode or
irritate skin.
Using established ingredients
* Companies can use ingredients on their products
that are already proven to be safe.

The Truth Behind Animal Testing

What is animal testing?
* Animal testing or animal experimentation is the act of
performing procedures on living animals for the purpose of
research, such as in biology, notably things like diseases
and testing the effectiveness of new medical products. In
addition, animal testing also occurs in the home and
beauty products industry like cosmetics and household
cleaners Furthermore, most of these action can cause the
animals physical and psychological distress, and in most
cases even death.

Types of test
Skin/Eye irritation/corrosion (tests for
reversible/irreversible damage on skin and eyes--1-3
rabbits)
Skin: Substance is applied to shaved skin
* skin may show signs of redness, rash, lesions, scaling, &
inflammation
Eye: Substance is applied to the eye(s)

How many animals die per year in the US?

* Every year in the US, more than 100 million defenseless
animals are killed in laboratories during procedures to test
various cosmetics, drugs, and chemicals.
How is animal testing regulated in the US?
* The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) is often the only law that
addresses the minimum standards of care for animals at
research facilities. Though it specifically excludes the
majority of animals used in research testing. Furthermore,
labs are not required to report non AWA protected animals
*In addition, most inspectors arent empowered to do
anything consequential about violations.
Why change needs to happen?
* In addition to causing harm to these animals, the
majority of these procedures are completely unnecessary.
As of this day, many alternatives are available to use and
are just as efficient. Furthermore, animals are typically
poor models and the results from these experiment in
which they are used, does not guarantee the results will be
the same for humans.
Other countries vs. the US

The European Union, Norway, India have banned

cosmetic testing on animals

Israel banned the import, marketing and sale of

any cosmetics, toiletries or detergents whose
manufacturing process involves animal testing

* rabbit may start showing signs of redness, bleeding,

ulcers, & blindness

Acute toxicity (oral, inhalation, skin) (tests to

determine the amount of a substance that causes the
subject to die within 14 days from exposure when
substance is swallowed, inhaled, applied to skin--7 rats/20
rats/ 20 rats, rabbits, or guinea pigs)
Oral: Substance is forced down rats throat by the aid of a
feeding tube
Inhalation: Rat is placed in a tube & is forced to inhale the
substance
Skin: Substance is applied to the shaved skin & covered
with a patch to avoid animal from licking it (removing)
* As a result, rat may experience diarrhea, convulsions,
bleeding from the mouth/nose, seizures, paralysis, or
death

Repeat dose (28 day) and subchronic (90 day)

toxicity (Tests for changes in the cells or organs caused
by repeated exposure--40 rats/80 rats)
* Animal is force-fed & forced to inhale the substance, in
addition, substance is also applied to skin for a 28/90 day
period, At the end the animal is killed, & their tissues are
examined

Carcinogenicity or combined carcinogenicity/ chronic

toxicity (Tests for cancer and other long-term effects of
exposure--4000 mice or rats)
