Handling of Stories Involving Minors

With stories involving minors there are rules that are not allowed to be
breached which involves not mentioning their name, address, school and
you cannot included a photo of them in the report. They also have
guidelines that involve them not interviewing anyone who knows the
underage person who can leak information about the proceedings.
However in court there are no automatic restrictions, but the court can
make an order that overturns the hearing and prevents the hearing of the
identification of the minor who was involved with the situation.
Contempt of Court
Contempt of Court is when somebody has interfered with the process of
court and the administration of court. This can prevented in several ways
which all result in different types of justice if its not been carried out
properly. If there is a reason that Contempt of Court is seen as a serious
offence, the judge can sentence them to prison.
Libel & Defamation
Libel & Defamation is a law that protects an individuals identity &
reputation. It allows people to sue if their reputation is damage in any way.
Defamatory happens when somebody lowers themselves in the estimation
of right-thinking members of the public, causes them to be avoided and
shunned by the general public, disparages them for their profession and
exposes their hatred ridicule or contempt.
Coverage of Elections
Coverage of Elections must have all radio stations that want to cover it
give a balanced amount of coverage for all parties that are a part of the
election. The Ofcom broadcast code has detailed rules that talks about the
radio stations having to have impartiality so they can give the
broadcasters a guideline that they must follow during the election. One of
the rules in section 6 of the Ofcom code state that Equal coverage must
be given to all major parties during the election period, and broadcasters
must also consider giving appropriate coverage to other parties and
independent parties. However the BBC do not have to follow any of these
codes, however they have their own code that they must follow.

Task 2
Example of Sensationalist Story
Will & Kates new child story:
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/royal-baby-will-blonde-girl-5549934
The reason why this story is sensationalism is because the Mirror are
suggesting that they already have information about their new child who
is still in Kates womb. They said that the child will have Blonde hair, that
it will be called Alice, that it will weigh between 7 and 8 pounds and that it
will arrive on Saturday 25th April. The Mirror have assumed information
about the baby that their reporters may have been told about, this is
unreliable as the information could be false.
Analysing the Ethical Issues
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19595221
The Ethical Issues of this story is that the tabloid who published the cover
with Kate was on was showing her topless which was invading into their
privacy. With the French version of Closer magazine creating a magazine
cover of a person who is a part of the royal family showing her topless,
this disrespects the royals family and also invades their private life which
is consider bad as the Will and Kate never really have their own time as
they are always greeting places in the UK and all around the world.
Invading Peoples Privacy Story
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/5713997/rebekah-brookscleared-by-phone-hacking-trial.html
In this news article, it talks about Rebekah Brooks being cleared of any
phone hacking that involved News International, The reason why this can
be good is that they can gather information that can be great for a news
article and the general public will be attracted to the story and it will fall
under public interest stories and gain more publicity. However the reason
why I would be against this is that it is hacking into people personal
devices, finding all the information that has been transmitted on the
device. This can be dangerous as they could be finding information that is
showing them a darker side to a celebrities and create a bad image for
them. Overall phone hacking can have its ups and downs but in my
opinion I think that phone hacking is bad as its going into peoples private
lives and invade their personal information and potentially threaten their
career.

Task 3

Story Priority, Immediacy and What Types of Stories Are They
The first story (starts at 0:00) that was presented in this BBC news bulletin
was about 3 Islamic people pleading guilty for a potential terrorist attack
when they tried flying to Syria for arms training. The reason why this story
is first is because it is important for the general public to know that
terrorist activities were in the works and that the UK is being targeted by
this. This story was 2 years ago on Friday 15th March 2013, there were no
follow-ups to the story as they were being held by the court and they are
awaiting their court date. This story would come under the public interests
column.
The next story (at 4:20) talks about the prime minister and his deputy
head Nick Clegg unveiling a brand new plan for press regulation following
the press intrusion, the reason why this story was second is to do with the
first story being more important than this one, however its still useful for
the public to know about so they presented it for everyone to get an
understanding. Again this story was 2 years ago on the same date as the
story like every other story that will be featured on this news bulletin. This
was a follow up from the phone hacking scandal and shows the aftermath
and how the government are trying to fix it. This story would come under
public interests.
The third story (at 7:23) that was talked about on the news bulletin was
about how a quarter of a million primary school places in the UK will be
needed by September. This story is further into the news bulletin as its
not as relevant as the other two stories, however this is still general news
that a large population of would like to be informed about, especially for
mothers and fathers. This story also shows facts and figures for people to
know which informs them more about the story. This story was presented
2 years ago on the same day like all the stories presented on this news
bulletin. This story isnt a follow up as it just been introduced by the
government and its a new topic that has been announced. This story
would come under public and human interests.
The next story (at 10:23) talks about a man who has to appear in court is
to be charged with the murder of a Kristina Edkins. This story is not too
relevant as its being presented later in the news bulletin, however the
story will still be presented as its still serious news as its to do with
murder. Again this story was presented in the news bulletin 2 years ago on
the same date as every story. This story is a follow up from the original
first story about the girl who was murdered without knowing who had a
part in it. This story would come under public interests.

The next story (at 10:56) is about how Eric Joyce is banned from buying
Alcohol in the houses of parliament. This story as well is not relevant
because its only a short story and its presented later into the news
bulletin. This story was presented 2 years ago on the same date as every
other story. This story is not a follow up as it has nothing to follow up from.
This story would be a public interest.
The next story (at 11:10) is about Nick Philpot, a man who was accused of
killing 6 of his children in a house fire in Derby has spent another day in
the witness box claiming he wasnt involved. Again, this story is not
relevant compared to the top 3 stories as its a short segment and its also
presented later within the news bulletin. This story was presented 2 years
ago alongside the other stories on this bulletin. This story is a follow up as
it talks about the original events that happened in the first place. This
story would come under public interests.
The next story at (at 12:35) is about how the BBC have learnt that more
than 30 families have taken legal action to a hospital in Cumbria blaming
medical negligence and poor care for the death of 40 patients including 2
mother and 14 babies. This story has relevance for the people that want
to indulge in what is being said about the hospital but compared to the
other stories in this news bulletin, it is not as important. This story along
with the other stories was presented 2 years ago, the story isnt a follow
up as the story has just been reported. This story would come under
human and public interest.
There is a break recapping on the headlines that they have talked about
and they also show some other stories that would be coming up in the
second part.
The next story they talk about (at 15:51) is about London railway works
digging up evidence of Londons medieval past whilst building new
railways. This story caps of the second part as new headliner but at the
same time does not compare to the first headline showing that the first
story is more important but this story has some importances as it kicks
off the second part of the news bulletin. Along with every story in this
news bulletin, it was presented. There is no follow up to this story as this
has just been announced. This story would be public interest
The next story in the second part of the news bulletin (at 18:13) is about
protesters that are against a high speed railway line from London and
Birmingham have lost a bunch of legal challenges between the head court
of the railway company. The story doesnt have bunch against the other
stories that have been presented, yet it still is relevant for the general
public. This was presented 2 years ago with the other stories. This is a
follow up from the previous stories involving them protesting to the
company. This story is for public interest.

The third story in the second part (at 19:35) talks about surgeons in
London have carried out the first liver transplant. This story again is an
interesting topic let the other stories are higher up than this because they
are at the start of the news bulletin. Again, this story was presented 2
years ago with the other stories, this story is following up from the
previous attempts of trying to complete a liver transplant. This story is for
public interest.
The next story (at 22:19) is about the horse racing at the Cheltenham
festival. This story is low down the news bulletin as its not as relevant as
the other stories that are in this news bulletin. This story was again was
broadcasted 2 years ago with the other stories. There are follow up stories
which are pre build up to the event. This story is for human interest.
The last story that was cover in the news bulletin (at 23:56) talks about
the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day. This story is left last to wrap up the
bulletin, this shows that its not that important but people do like to know
about it. This story again was broadcasted 2 years ago with the other
stories, there are no follow ups to this as it talks about the anniversary of
the event. This story is for human interest.
How Are The Audio Clips Used?
The audio clips were mainly used during the recordings of the event and
location it was at, this was effective because it would show where the
event took place with the story being read out by the reporter. They
support the stories well due to the way they present it and how they have
the location and facts/statistics on screen with the reporter reading it out,
this makes it easy for the audience to engage and reel them in with what
is being said about the story.
