10 THINGS MEMO
Finding a job can be difficultas we learned in class there are a multitude of
factors that go into the process. The process can be daunting and time
consuming but with by following the advice finding a job can be made easy
well easier.
1. Spell Check- LeanIn.org President Rachel Thomas found that 98% of
resumes they tested contained at least one grammatical error. So
proofreading is immensely important.
2. Personal Networking- The world is increasingly technologically
driven, however in finding/consolidating a job personal networking
remains the most fruitful resourcethus upfront thinking is crucial.
3. Cover Letter- A letter stating who you are and why you are valuable
to the company. Hiring managers have been known to automatically
reject resumes without an accompanying letter.
4. Action Verbs- In ones resume it is important to use powerful verbs to
grab the readers attention.
5. Resume- A resumes should emphasis work history, what the employer
wants, optional summary of qualifications. It is often a determining
factor in a job selection process and should be done with extreme
attention to detail.
6. ATS- Applicant tracking system is a filter that online job search
databases use in order to filter through a large number of applicants.
Keywords can be used to ensure one surpasses the ATS.
7. Elevator Pitch- Is a thirty second rundown of ones most relevant
experience, education, skills, and interests. The aim is to impress
quickly and gain opportunities.
8. Digital Dirt- 90% of hiring managers reference sites such as Facebook
during the hiring process. Thus it is essential to upkeep a professional
online presence, de-taging drunkenly photos and maintaining an
appropriate profile.
9. Looking the Part- Dress according to the job you want to have. Look
professional and well kept to wow your interviewers.
10.Soft Skills- Employers desire soft skills: leadership, problem solving,
communication, teamwork and work ethic.
The aforementioned points can really deter the outcome of a job hunt.
Understanding the roles of both the personal and digital work world and
leveraging yourself in the right way it is possible to land the dream job. If you
