Becoming an Engineer
What they do

Petroleum Engineers travel nationally while generating a gratuitous salary of

$89,000-$140,000. They must be social with lots of background work within the
engineering academy. Specifics include working with clients to find extraction
sites and maintaining drills for proper usage.

Work
Environment

Petroleum engineers have to travel often when called with little notice to a drill
site. Normally though, petroleum engineers will work inside of an office type
environment. work schedules for petroleum engineers range from 50-60 hours
per week and then occasionally have 84-hour rotations of on-duty and off-duty
times.

How to become
one

Petroleum engineers must have a bachelors degree in engineering, preferably

in petroleum engineering. However, a bachelors degree in mechanical or
chemical engineering may also work. Employers also value work experience,
so cooperative engineering programs, in which students earn academic credit
for job experience, are valuable tool.

Demand Comparison

Petroleum engineerings percentage skyrockets the other common engineering industries by far. Even
when I combined all three industries percentages, they only amounted to 21% which is 5% less than
petroleum engineering. Petroleum engineers are 19% higher than Aerospace but I believe Aerospace will
grow rapidly within the next decade as space exploration will become popular in the near future. Petroleum
percent increase also surpassed Industrial engineering, I had compared these programs as I had expected
Industrial engineers to stay at its current rate. Nuclear Engineering was down by 17% and I had honestly
thought it would be a little higher as Nuclear Fusion has been arising in pay and popularity.

Comparing Salaries by Location

The cost of living changed considerably with California and Texas standards. Due to Californias cost of
living, I expected a slightly higher salary. I always thought Texas had a large pay for petroleum engineers
due to the industry being so powerful in Texas. Ive done a little more research and found out North Dakota
has the highest net pay for petroleum engineers in America. I didnt delve into that state on my project
though because I know Id never want to live in North Dakota.

Compare Salary by Education

All in all, the degrees actually only gave about a maximum of $3,000 more per year. That money is being
contrasted between a Bachelors degree and a PHD in Reservoir Engineers. Years of experience however
changes slightly but its a noticeable change over time in a productive manner. I used these two cities as a
base of where I wanted to live in that particular state but I do realize the best pays arent in the congested
areas of each state. In conclusion, I would like to live in California after my time at A&M is completed not
because of the pay increase but also because of their living environment.
