Title: Report into the features of digital graphics

Author: Natalie Robinson
Introduction/Method: In this report I am going to explain about different graphic products, choose
two and review them. I will also discuss the suitability and impact of the selected digital graphics.
Background information:
There are two main types of Graphics / Images.

A Bitmap image is composed of pixels; a pixel is a piece of information containing one

colour. Bitmap images can be scaled down, but not scaled up. File types of a Bitmap
image include PNG, JPEG, BMP, TIFF and GIF. They are often used in Raster Graphics,
most commonly in Photos and Illustrations, and are more common than Vectors.
Vector images are made up of lines, shapes and curves. No pixels whatsoever. A Vector
image is based on Mathematical Equations from the computer. They are fully scalable no
matter how many pixels there are. File types of a Vector include EPS, PDF, SVG, WMF
(Clip-Art). Vector images may contain Bitmap files too. Vectors are rare file types. They
are commonly used for Illustrations in design and Logos, as they then become Unique
and can be printed on anything (e.g Thompsons Logo on planes and in shops). Vectors
can be rasterized, converted to Bitmap, but it is then harder to covert a Bitmap back.
The more PPI in a Bitmap image especially (Pixels per Inch), it means the resolution of
the Graphic will be higher. Resolution in an image being the amount of detail it holds. A
video (a collection of images in various frames per second) in 720p (1280 x 720 pixels)
would be of a lower resolution than 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels). Its also notable that the
more pixels and vibrant colours, the image or graphic file size will be larger. The sizes
can be reduced by resizing them in a program or compressing them.

File Types:

PNG: Portable Network Graphics

Main Report
Graphic 1

What are the features of your chosen graphic product?

This is a Road sign, the Car with the curvy lines under the lines indicate that whatever
surface the Car is travelling on may be slippery. The triangle is red to indicate danger and
the car and lines are black so they stand out with the white background colour. This is so it
attracts the drivers attention so they know to slow down or just take caution. The tilted car
also makes it more obvious that the car is slipping. This image will be larger on signs in a
motorway for example because of the colours, so even people who have visual acuity
problems can make out what it is much easily. The image is there with no text because if
you were to be driving past this fast you most likely wouldnt even have much time to read
it.
A triangle is used to outline the object in red, because Triangles often indicate danger, so
the red triangle is a perfect combination. People are (hopefully) used to seeing cars and can
understand motion of the image (the curved lines) and be able to understand what it is
indicating. The image is a .SVG vector image (Scalable Vector Graphics) based on
mathematical equations and not pixels, and can be scaled to any size. Resolution isnt really
important here.
What are the purposes of the graphic product?
It informs the driver that there is a danger or fault on the road, whether it is in a more
dangerous environment like the motorway or on a tight road. The colours and the objects
are easily recognisable and stand out, helping the driver to quickly identify what is
happening, if that is not followed, the driver is basically putting themselves at risk of an
accident or maybe even death. It will also hopefully persuade the driver to slow down,
maybe switch gears and be much more cautious on road. It may even educate the driver so
if they ever see that sign again they know what its telling them, and the give a sense of
danger.

How are the features suitable for the intended audience?

Who is the main target audience for the graphic?
Drivers, people taking a driving test will also have to learn the meaning of this sign for health
and safety reasons. Possibly even pedestrians will look at this sign and will take it into an
account that crossing the road could be dangerous and slippery.
The intended impact is to make the audience and who it applies to take much more caution
and be careful when crossing the road.
Is the graphic suitable (fit) for purpose?
It informs the audience very well that there is a possible danger on the road or pavement,
the colours as mentioned before help drivers identify what it is signifying, red indicates
danger clearly. It should also persuade the driver to take caution.
It is a danger symbol so will hopefully and most likely make the driver be careful.
It evokes the emotion of caution using techniques such as the use of the colour red which
indicates danger, and the tilted car. These make the person seeing the sign while driving
more aware of the road.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the graphic product?
One strength of this vector image, are the colours used, the other being that it was
done as a vector, simple shapes have been used to make this sign clear. Those two
strengths link together well. The black and red on the clear frost white background
help the sign to stand out in any time of day whether it is afternoon or midnight to
get the attention of the audience quickly. This helps greatly as drivers could be
travelling on the road at any time of day and possibly be unaware of the dangers on
the road, so realistically alerts them of possible life threatening situations. The
simple shapes, the triangle, being red, a colour of danger, and the triangle also
showing danger, with the simple drawing of a black easily recognisable car INSIDE
this danger triangle helps the driver who could be driving past this sign at a high
speed, quickly become aware of the dangers.
One weakness of this sign however is no use of text. Not everyone is able to tell
what is going on by just using an image with some lines indicating movement. Some
people may need text. Another weakness (to do with the text mainly) is that because
this sign could also be driven past at a high speed and not easily recognised by some
visually impaired people, so the whole purpose of the image may not be taken in by
a person properly, putting other people on the road at risk as one doesnt know.
This image could be improved by just adding a little bit more detail, not too much
detail, maybe just text in capital letters in Black saying SLIPPERY, so the driver can
instantly tell there is a road hazard.

Graphic 2
What are the features of your chosen graphic product?
This is a Bitmap image of a movie poster. The films is Kung Fu Panda 2, as plenty of people
are already aware of the first film, they can
recognise the face and name of the main
character, Po the Panda, and notice the
large contrasting 2 so will easily make fans
of the original film know a sequel is coming.
So in that case, there would be no need to
put the title text of the film. The text above
Pos head is black, on top of the Orange
background so it stands out. Personally I
think the orange should be brighter and the
back text isnt that noticeable at the
moment. The use of Warm Colours, Black
and White helps certain parts to stand out
so a person quite far away will quickly grasp
the information. Someone walking past
would most likely look at the whole poster
and read the text at the top and underneath
the 2. The pattern inside the 2 resembles
that of a Chinese Dragon, and the Panda is
relatively a Chinese animal.
If you look at this version of the film poster
you can see some white lines. The Position
of the Main character and the Number 2 are
the first things that catch the audiences
attention. Not so much of the rule of thirds
has been used here, but the composition is
faultless.
The file size of the image (271KB) is
determined by its amount of Pixels (as it is Bitmap) the original size, the resolution Ive
found, is 1001x1500, and may have much larger sizes as it is a render of the actual 3D

character (possibly done in a program such as Cinema 4D, Maya etc.) and edited in
Photoshop or Illustrator so the image can be scaled down to fit in Magazines as
advertisements or on Billboards for example. The file type in the final may have most likely
been a .JPEG file as it can maintain the most quality at a lower file size than other Bitmap
images. The original file sizes before being put together and compressed would have been
mainly Vector images and other 3D file types as it would have been needed to rescale ready
for adverts.
What are the purposes of the graphic product?
Its to inform fans of the prequel film that a sequel is coming out, so the emotion it should
evoke is for the fans (mainly younger children and teens) to become excited, maybe even
surprised. This will attract attention thus people who see this poster will most likely spread
the word, so more people will hopefully end up seeing the film. The colours are warm,
bright and energetic, and the main character is easily identifiable. The poster may even
persuade people to go and watch it as the first film received so much positive feedback.
How are the features suitable for the intended audience?
Who is the main target audience for the graphic?
I.e. Interest groups, gender, age etc
The poster should hopefully interest those who love animals, but most
importantly watchers of the prequel. The film features mainly
anthropomorphic characters that, depending on how theyre drawn,
attract the attention of people more as theyre funnier, cartoony and in
ways more children friendly. It should attract children, young teens and
families as its a comedy based film, you can tell by the main characters
expression. Its not aimed at any specific gender in my opinion, but may
attract boys more as its a fighting film and features a male main
character. The intended impact is to excite fans of the film. I think as a
whole the poster is aimed at families looking to take out friends or
children to watch a good funny film together.
Is the graphic suitable (fit) for purpose?
The purpose was to excite and inform the audience about the new film. That
it did. The poster is suitable as it does not contain any inappropriate graphics
or anything of the sort. It in the majority of cases successfully sells what its
original purpose was: Grabbing peoples attention and intentionally get them
to watch the film.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the graphic product?
Two strengths are mainly the colours and the composition. The colour scheme is a
warm analogic theme, which look vibrant and will attract peoples attention quickly.
The black and white fur from the Panda help those colours, red, oranges and yellows
to stand out. As said before, the composition is great because the viewer is
automatically drawn to the face of the character on show, and to the large red 2 in
front of him. This effect is great so the viewer, say if they were to be passing on a
train, can see it easily from afar and quickly tell if they know the prequel that a
sequel is coming.

One weakness is the overuse of texture and effects. The number 2 would have
looked fine without the extra dragon pattern placed in it, as it looks clogged, along
with that shine effect. The steam coming off the characters makes it look too bright
in a way. Another weakness being the use of extra unnecessary text at the top. The
font and black on orange dont work well in my opinion, they just wouldnt catch my
eye like the rest of the poster, and it makes the poster appear crowded.
I think to make this picture that little bit more interesting (improvements), they
could remove the extra textures. That dragon in the 2 would not be noticeable until
further focus. I also think removing the text at the top would help, or even
shortening what it says would do fine. Not much people would have the time to read
the whole text unless they wanted to.
