TheNervousSystem
Thenervoussystemisacollectionofnervesandspecializedcellsknownasneuronsthat
transmitsignalsbetweendifferentpartsofthebody.Neuronsarethebasicfunctionalunitsof
thenervoussystem.Theyhaveanumberofdifferentstructureswhichdistinguishthemfrom
anyothercellinthebody.Itisthebodyselectricalwiringbasically.Thenervoussystemhas
twocomponents:thecentralnervoussystemandtheperipheralnervoussystem.Thecentral
nervoussystemismadeupofthebrain,spinalcordandnerves.Theperipheralnervous
systemconsistsofsensoryneurons,gangliaandnervesthatconnecttooneanotherandto
thecentralnervoussystem.Thefunctionsconsistoftwomainsubdivisions:thesomatic,or
voluntary,componentandtheautonomic,orinvoluntary,component.Theautonomicnervous
systemregulatescertainbodyprocesses,suchasbloodpressureandtherateofbreathing,
thatworkwithoutconsciouseffort.
