1. Rhetorical Situation: Audience and Purpose
a) Who are the intended audience(s) and discourse community (ies)?
-The intended audiences I aim for are the general public and the discourse
communities are the education community and even state government.
b) What does the audience already know and what do they want to know?
-They already know that high school and college are two very different things. They
want to know if the state regulated tests and if in the teaching regulations they are
preparing their kids or students for college level education.
c) How much time will the audience spend with each genre?
- The audience will spend about maybe 30 to 40 minutes to preview the whole
lecture.
d) What is the purpose (inform, persuade and/or entertain)?
-The point of the whole entire lecture is to inform the high schools and even the state
that the students who leave high school for college arent prepared enough for it since
nowadays high school only focuses on what the state tests focus on and not what the
students actually need to know for college life.
e) How formal/informal is the language and what affect does this have on the audience
and/or purpose?
-The language used for this lecture is formal. This way people can have a better
understanding of the basics of the paper or presentation.
f) What specialized vocabulary is used and what does this tell you about the intended
audience?
-The vocabulary that will be used for this matter is going to be the everyday
vocabulary and maybe a more advanced educational vocabulary.
g) What other language features do you notice (text, type, font, color, visuals, etc.)?
-This lecture will contain some charts and other things in that nature to help the
viewers better understand the seriousness of this matter.
2. Rhetorical Issues: Ethos, Pathos and Logos
a) How does this genre establish (or attempt to establish) its credibility with the audience?

Jesus Saenz
-The sources Im going to use for this presentation will have credibility because the
results are from High School students from the past and also it will have some of my own
experiences.
b) What emotions is the genre attempting to evoke from its audience?
-The emotions that the genre is trying to evoke from its audience is the realization of
what the states law on education is and the fact of it not actually working everyone.
c) What types of evidence are used to support claims? Is it valid/reliable? If there is no
evidence, what is used to help support the information presented and is it effective?
-The evidence that is presented is passed experiences of others who had problem
adjusting to college lifestyle and study habit because of High Schools lack of education.
3. Structure and Delivery
a) How is the information organized to convey its message?
- The information found in this genre is organized in a very linear fashion, making it
easier for the audience to identify different sections of the article.
b) Are there limitations placed on the information because of the genre? Does it have more
freedom to express what it needs to because of the genre?
-The genre is the type that is very open to anybodys own opinion because this type of
genre has more to a lot different individuals who have gone through this matter at hand
and everyones story is different, so of course this is an open subject for everyone.
c) How does the structure facilitate its purpose?
-A visual source like this one makes it easier to share a message and provide enough
information to support the statements voiced in the lecture. The platform that it was
published on makes it easier to share with other people, as long as they have access to the
internet.

Genre 1: Did No Child Left Behind actually work?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2015/02/13/no-child-left-

behinds-test-based-policies-failed-will-congress-keep-them-anyway/
1. Rhetorical Situation: Audience and Purpose
a) Who are the intended audience(s) and discourse community (ies)?
-This article is like the previous one, as it focuses on the education in the United States
and also adds the opinion on No Child Left behind Law as well.
b) What does the audience already know and what do they want to know?
-The audience already knows about the law what its for and the people need to know
that the law even in good purpose never actually helped with students throughout the
United States.
c) How much time will the audience spend with each genre?
-Just as much as the previous article, at least 30 minutes to get the point across to the
viewer and the audience.
d) What is the purpose (inform, persuade and/or entertain)?
-The purpose of this is to inform the audience that the law never did actually worked
for its purpose and it just never really was been effective.
e) How formal/informal is the language and what affect does this have on the audience
and/or purpose?
-This is going to be in a formal language, this way the audience will have a better
educational understanding of this presentation with an more educational language.
f)What specialized vocabulary is used and what does this tell you about the intended
audience?
-I intend to use the same type of vocabulary as the first article, which is everyday
vocabulary.
g) What other language features do you notice (text, type, font, color, visuals, etc.)?
-This lecture also has a lot of pictures to illustrate the effects of the law and charts that
will show the downfall of the law.
2. Rhetorical Issues: Ethos, Pathos and Logos
a) How does this genre establish (or attempt to establish) its credibility with the
audience?
-The credibility of this is good because it was from a good source like the Washington
Times Newspaper. Also because the paper shows the views of congress and other
resource able sources.
b) What emotions is the genre attempting to evoke from its audience?
-Its going to try to get the emotion of 2nd thinking this law and itll try to ask for
change towards the law.

Jesus Saenz
c) What types of evidence are used to support claims? Is it valid/reliable? If there is no
evidence, what is used to help support the information presented and is it effective?
-The evidence of this matter is simple. The results and outlook of the law show that the
law isnt something that will be effective towards the students.
3. Structure and Delivery
a) How is the information organized to convey its message?
- The information discussed in this genre has a seamless organization since it can be
easily divided into different categories if only one part of the message is of interest.
b) Are there limitations placed on the information because of the genre? Does it have
more freedom to express what it needs to because of the genre?
-This article like the other one before has a lot of open alleys for freedom of
expression and its always open for anyone to give their thoughts on this matter at
hand.
c) How does the structure facilitate its purpose?
- The structure of the article makes it easier to fulfill its informative purpose, since the
style of writing used in these types of documents relies mostly on facts and has little
use of emotional impact.

Assignment part 2
In comparing the audience and the purpose from both genre one and genre two,
they are not every different if you want to compare the two, because the final analysis
these 2 genres attack the lack of school education and lack of preparation for college. Of
course the only difference about these 2 genres is pretty much the sources because one is
based on a local government issue and the other is based on the issue throughout the
nation. But also there are another difference between them because the one about the
local government is more effective towards the audience.
In the terms on the ethos, pathos, logos, both genres are a slightly different
because one of the resources is based on a local newspaper are the resources can be creditable
and sometimes it can be questioned to be not resource able, yet the other resource is better
creditable then the first because its from a good newspaper like the Chicago News Times paper.
But these 2 can be creditable because they are newspapers and most newspapers are good
resources in all locally and nation wide type of newspapers.
The structures of both genres are good because they stay on topic, but the local
newspaper article is structured to focus on of course a local school district compared to the other
is structured to focus on the schools in all throughout the nation, both will be based on the
education issue but yet different if that makes sense.
