Postures et positions
Postura y posiciones
criture lgante.
The correct pen angle can be achieved with the conventional straight nib if the paper is slanted radically to the
left. The hand is held in a straight position. If looking at the
page sideways is a problem, angle the hand more sharply
to the left instead. These two variables can be adjusted to
achieve a happy medium.

Plumines de caligrafa
There are various nibs that can be used for calligraphy, such
as poster pen nibs, dip pen nibs, fountain pen nibs, and ruling pen nibs. Nibs come in a variety of widths and there is no
standard system for labeling nibs. Every manufacturer has its
own system for identifying nib size. Sheaffer Pen offers fine,
medium, and broad widths for standard calligraphy writing.

estilo ms libre y fluido.
CONSEILS PRATIQUES
HELPFUL HINTS
Hold your pen at a constant 45 angle to the writing
surface. Work at keeping the slant of the letters parallel.
The body of the letter is 5 nib widths high. Ascenders and
descenders are five widths above or below the line. Capital
letters are 7 widths high. Including ascenders and descenders, each line will be approximately 15 widths high in total.
To avoid tangling between lines, allow at least one width
of space before starting the next line. Between words, allow
a space equal to about the width of a letter.
Note the thick-to-thin strokes achieved with an upward
stroke of the pen. When stroking away or up, apply only
light pressure.
For letters made in one stroke, pause and change stroke
direction, where necessary, without lifting the pen or
changing its angle.
CONSEJOS PRCTICOS

Lcriture gothique
La escritura gtica
Developed in Europe during the 12th century, Gothic lettering is also known as Fraktur, Black Letter or Old English.
Another name for it is Textura, derived from the distinctive
texture created by the even, vertical letter forms. In the past,
the Gothic Hand was most commonly used for formal book
writing, as its compressed vertical style offered maximum
speed and economy of space.

Calligraphy makes writing beautiful. It requires consistency
of shape, stroke, weight, spacing and rhythm. Although
consistency is achieved through repetition, calligraphy is not
a matter of
mechanical repetition. Calligraphy is more than acquiring a
manual skill. One must train his or her eye to see the subtle
details and proportions of the letterforms.
Applications
Aplicaciones

Everyday Uses
Calligraphy does not have to be simply used for decorating
invitations and cards; use the skills learned to improve your
everyday handwriting. You will be amazed at what positive
effect can be made by showing that you have taken the time
to write your letter carefully and clearly.
Here are some tips on how to improve your own handwriting.
Try to keep letters and words equally spaced. Good writing
is based on a series of equal sized ovals and parallel lines.
When joining letters, try to keep horizontal lines as straight
as possible and diagonal lines at a constant angle. Make
similar letters the same height. Equally, make sure letters that
are not similar have different heights. Avoid using too many
loops. Use a good
writing instrument (we would recommend a Sheaffer of
course!).
