Use the internet to find definitions/explanations for each

of the following terms. You must be prepared to explain


these terms in your own words to demonstrate your
understanding.
INTERNET- a vast computer network linking smaller
computer networksworldwide (usually preceded by the). The
Internet includes commercial, educational, governmental,
and other networks, all of which use the same set of
communications protocols.
MODEM- an electronic device that makes possible the
transmission of data toor from a computer via telephone or other
communication lines.
BANDWIDTH/BPS- the range of frequencies within a given band, in
particular that's used for transmitting a signal.
BROWSER- is an application used to access and view websites.
SEARCH ENGINE

a program that searches for and identifies items in a database that


correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used
especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide Web.

Example: Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

META TAG- a tag in HTML that is inserted at the top of a Web


page chiefly todescribe its content and provide keywords for use
by search engines.
HTTP- hypertext transfer protocol: the standard protocol for
transfering hypertext documents on the World Wide Web.

HYPERTEXT- a method of storing data through a computer


program that allows a user to create and link fields of
information at will and to retrieve the data non sequentially.
IP ADDRESS/NUMBER- a code that identifies a computer
network or a particular computer or other device on a
network, consisting of four numbers separated by periods.
DOMAIN NAME- The part of a network address that identifies it as
belonging to a particular domain.
URL/URI- a protocol for specifying addresses on the internet.
WEBSITE- a connected group of pages on the world wide web.
NETIQUETTE- the proper etiquette when communicating on the
internet.
FIREWALL- a part of a computer system or network that is used to
block unauthorized access while you are accessing internet.
COOKIE- a small amount of data that created by a website and
saved by your web browser, its purpose to remember info about
you.
CLOUD STORAGE- Saving data on the internet
NET NEUTRALITY- network that allows people to share freely
ADWARE- a software that displays advertisements
VIRUS / MALWARE- designed to damage computer, makes the
computer do things you would not want it to do
DATA-MINING- Is a process of analyzing data and summarizing it
DENIAL OF SERVICE ATTACK- is an attack that makes a server
unavailable by flooding the server with requests
PHARMING- An attacker redirecting traffic from one website to
another

PHISHING- Is a attack to acquire information for identify theft


SPAM- Is a letter that is sent to a lot of people in a little amount of
time.
