Argumentative Essay
Homosexuality: Lifestyle Choice or Genes?
The whole LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community
faces discrimination every day, from adults, teenagers, even the Catholic
Church. But why are so many people joining the LGBT community? Many
anti-gay activists claim that homosexuality is based off of lifestyle choices
made by the homosexual and their family while an opposing group of those
who believe that sexuality is generic. Sexuality is generic because studies
show that homosexuality ties along with brain size, a gene switched, and the
finger length of the individual. Therefore, one should not be blamed for their
sexuality.
To start off, Studies show that homosexual males brain size is closer
to the size of a heterosexual womans brain. The same goes for homosexual
females and heterosexual males. (Bingham, John. "Gay Men and
Heterosexual Women Have Similar Brains, Study Suggests." The Telegraph.
N.p., 17 June 2008. Web. 19 Feb. 2015.) What human being is able to
choose their brain size in the womb? Stating that one could choose their
brain size is similar to saying that one could choose their height or hair
color. Though many wish for the choice, it just is not reachable. Though
homosexuality may not be a choice, homosexual behavior is. If we are
governed by feelings only, we are reduced to just being animals.
Homosexuality if practiced is immoral and a choice. One cannot take charge
of their inner thoughts. Its uncontrollable, like blinking, or laughing at a
humorous remark. One is aware of the actions, but unable to seize them.
In like manner, Scientists from California found that lesbian women
have a greater difference in length between their middle finger and index
finger than straight women do. Straight women seem to hold less of a gap
between middle and index fingers while homosexual women have a
noticeably greater gap between finger lengths, more commonly found in
men. ("Homosexuality Is Biological But Not Hard-wired." Intellectual
Vanities about Close to Everything. N.p., 11 Dec. 2007. Web. 23 Feb. 2015.)
Once again, a common quality that one cannot control, similar to height.
One cannot choose their height, or their finger length.
Lastly, many studies have shown that switching a single gene can
determine the sexuality of an animal or insect. Featherstone found the gene
interesting initially because it has the unusual ability to transport the
neurotransmitter glutamate out of glial cells cells that support and nourish
nerve cells but do not fire like neurons do. Previous work from his

laboratory showed that changing the amount of glutamate outside cells can
change the strength of nerve cell junctions, or synapses, which play a key
role in human and animal behavior. ("Homosexuality Is Biological But Not
Hard-wired." Intellectual Vanities about Close to Everything. N.p., 11 Dec.
2007. Web. 24 Feb. 2015.) Though homosexuality may lead to a change in
lifestyle or behavior (may as in usually but not always) but never does the
lifestyle of a person shift their personality or who they are in any way.
Homosexuality is strictly woven in the genes, as many built upon studies
have shown.
To wrap up, homosexuality is woven in the brain, not in the home.
Many scientific experiments have proven this many times, that
homosexuality lies in the depths of the brain, index and middle fingers, and
the genes of an individual. If homosexuality is the fault of the lifestyle of a
human being, then so is heterosexuality. That would be similar to saying that
a straight man woke up one day and looked in the mirror saying Oh! I think
Im going to be straight today! It just doesn't happen so why act like it does
for others of a different sexuality?
