manyenemies.Afterabouttenyearsorsoheisabletogettohisfamily.Thiscouldnothave
happenedwithoutthehelpofthegodsandgoddesses.
Inthisbook,therearemanygodsthatinterfereinthelivesofthehumansormortals.
Thegodscaninterfereinagoodwayorabadway.Agoodexampleofthiswouldbewhen
HermeshelpedOdysseusonCircesisland.HermesgaveOdysseusaplantthatmadehim
immunetoherpotions.IfHermesdidnthelpOdysseus,thenhewouldbeturnedintoapig,
andhewouldnevergetbacktoIthaca.ThisisanexampleofagodhelpingOdysseusget
throughhisjourney.Somegods,likeHermes,playfavoritessimplybecausetheylikethese
mortals.Theyarereallybiginfluencesonthemortalsandtheconflictsbetweenthemortals.
ThisshowsthatHermesreallycaredaboutOdysseusandwantedtohelphimgethome.
SomeothergodsthathelpedOdysseuswereAthena,Circe,andIno.
Anotherexampleiswhenthecattleofthesungod,Helios,aregrazingonanisland.
CircewarnedOdysseustoleavethecattlealoneandunharmed.However,Eurylochusforces
thecrewtocatchthecattlebecausetheyhavebeenatseaforalongtime.WhileOdysseusis
asleep,themenkilledoneoftheanimals.Later,Odysseusfindsoutandheisupset.Still,
Odysseusdoesnotstophiscrewfromcapturingthecattle.Thishappensforthenextsix
days.
Then,Lampetie,daughterofHelios,toldHeliosthatthecattlehasbeenkilledbythemenof
Odysseus.HeliosthenbegsstormingZeustopunishthem.ZeusreplytoHelioswas,
Son,youkeeponshiningamongthesedeathlessgodsandmortalmenacrossthe
goodgreenearth.Andasfortheguiltyones,why,soonenoughonthewinedarkseaIllhit
theirracingshipwithawhitehotbolt,Illtearitintosplinters.
WhenOdysseusandhismenheadouttoseafromtheisland,ZeusfollowsHelios
request.HekillsallofthemenexceptOdysseusbecausehedidnotharmthecattle.This
exampleshowsthatthegodshavetheirfavoritesandthattheyhavethepowertodoanything
tothemortals.Theycandestroyorproduce.
AnotherinterferinggodisPoseidontheearthquakegod.InTheOdyssey,hetypically
despisesOdysseusbecauseheblindedPolyphemus.PolyphemusisoneofPoseidonssons.
TogetrevengeonOdysseus,PoseidonrollsupahugestormtocarryOdysseusfurtheraway
fromhisdestination.
Withthatherammedthecloudstogetherbothhandsclutchinghistridentchurnedthe
wavesintochaos,whippingallthegalesfromeveryquarter,shroudingoverinthunderheads
theseaandearthatonceandnightsweptdownfromtheskyEastandSouthWindsclashed
andtheragingWestandNorth,sprungfromtheheavens,roiledheavingbreakersupand

ThereareotherexamplesofwhenPoseidontriestodestroyOdysseussafereturnhome.
AnotheriswhenPoseidonisangeredbythePhaeacianswhohelpedOdysseusgetbackto
Ithaca.ButthistimehedidnthurtOdysseus.HeturnedthePhaeaciansshipintostoneright
asitpulledupintotheharbor.ThisisevidencethatPoseidonisgenerallytryingtoget
revengeforhisson.Tocontinueon,noneofPoseidonsincidentswouldhavehappenedif
Odysseushadntbeenignorant.BeforeheblindedPolyphemus,hebelievedOdysseusreal
namewasNobody.Butafterhegotonhisshiptoleavetheisland,hesaid,

So,basicallyOdysseuswastheprimarycauseofPoseidonsrevenge.
