Word Family Tree

This Strategy is mainly used for new vocabulary to be used during or after a
reading. This could also be used at the beginning of a new unit or lesson as an
introduction to the new unit/lesson. This activity is a tool for getting students more
comfortable with vocabulary.
Grade level- I would honestly say that this activity would be ideal for middle school
students, it could be modified for the younger ages as well.
Text- any text would work well for this activity but I think that it would be most
effective with non-fiction.
Guidelines- if you choose to implement this activity as a pre-assessment than you
would want to have the hand out to the students a head of the reading to see where
their comprehension level is for the content we are about to read. If you decide to
use this as a pre-test, you could have the students complete the same handout
using a different writing utensil or color and have them use the information that
they just learned to fill in the correct information. If you decided to give this activity
to students after the reading I would assign different words from the text to each
group/table and then have each table share what they wrote about their assigned
words. If this is the first time using this activity with your class I would start the first
half of the handout together as a class and then allow them to finish the bottom on
their own or with their group.
Adaptations- for students who might be struggling learners or ELLs I think that the
best way to modify this activity is the way that we administer the assignment. I do
not believe that there is a lot of room to simplify the lesson. So if the students pair
up or if the teacher has the student complete the assignment verbally, because I
want the content understood.
