Unit essential questions: All about home

Lesson question:
Where do you live?
Lesson objective:
The students will be able to tell part of their address after doing activities practicing their
address.
Assessment:
The students will be asked what their address is and will respond verbally saying correct street.
The teacher will use a checklist to keep track of what the students responded.
NYS or other appropriate standard(s) addressed:
Geography
3. Demonstrates knowledge of the relationship between people, places, and regions.
a) Identifies features of own home and familiar places.
b) Names the street, neighborhood, city or and town where he/she lives
Opening:
The students will participate in circle like they do everyday and do calendar activities. The
students will sing and do hand motions to Where is Thumbkin?
Procedure:
1. The teacher will discuss with the students that we all live in houses and we have an address so
people know where we live and where to send out mail.
2. The teacher will ask the students Do you know where you live?
3. The teacher will allow students to give answers.
-The students may know what city they live in, as that was the lesson the day before.
4. The teacher will say and show the students the address of Care-A-Lot. 5479 Lakeshore Road
Lakeview, NY 14085.
5. The teacher will then explain and show where the street name is. Using the Care-A-Lot
address.
- The students addresses will be posted on the wall.
6. The teacher will ask the students to show and say what their street name is.
7. The teacher will then tell the students that they are going to decorate and make their own
houses and put their address on their house.
Tiered by Complexity:
Less complex: The students will have pre-cut out printed street names. They will find the correct
house street name and glue to their house.
More complex: The students will write their correct house number and street name on their
house.
Closure: The teacher will ask each of the students when they are done making their house to tell
the teacher what their address is.

Materials:
Houses posted in the classroom with the students addresses.
Pre-typed, printed and cut out house numbers and street names.
Cut outs of houses
markers, crayons, pencils.
