Human History dates back all of 6,000 years thanks to the use of Archeologists and the findings
of various human artifacts. The people who lived there from 2,000 to as close as 200 years ago
were called the lipay. They have produced a lot of artifacts that have been found such as
arrowheads, morteros which are a form of utensils used when making medicine, and pottery
shards. Today the lipay are closest related to the Yuman indian people who have been
inhabiting deserts for the past 11,000 years. In the Volcan Mountain the Lipay indians used the
resources found in the area in order to thrive. They survived off the local plant life to make
medicine as well as eating various edible plants like acorns, berries, grass, seeds and more.
They also ate deer and rabbit found in the Volcan Mountain range.
Since 1989 the Volcan Mountain Foundation or (VMF) and its local San Diego based
partners have helped acquire over 17,000 acres of land. This amount of land is being conserved
adding to the total amount of conservation efforts to approximately 31,000 acres. The Volcan
Mountain Foundation became a land owner in 2009, and was able to use that to its advantage
to help with conserving the Volcan Mountain Range. The property bought was a former Hunters
camp, the land bought has been added to the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Later on
the VMF has bought several other areas to be added to the Volcan Mountain Wilderness
Preserve. This has helped the area of Volcan Mountain overall by educating the public about
helping nature close to home and the importance of wildlife. Currently they are working to
acquire more land to add to the preserve and help preserve the beauty of Volcan Mountain.
