1.- PLAN DE TRABAJO

Esta asignatura est dividida en dos partes: la primera se centra en el estudio de la cultura e
historia del Reino Unido e Irlanda y la segunda en los Estados Unidos de Amrica. Consta de doce
unidades o bloques temticos que equivalen a diez crditos ECTS. Cada crdito corresponde a 25
horas de trabajo del alumnado. Por lo tanto, va a dedicar un total de 250 horas a esta asignatura.
Dada la gran extensin de esta asignatura, se ha hecho una seleccin de temas y ejemplos caso,
presentando algunos de los aspectos fundamentales del contexto social, cultural e histrico de estos
pases de habla inglesa. La disposicin de estos temas obedece a un criterio didctico y se ha
agrupado en torno a diferentes bloques temticos, agrupando aspectos histricos, culturales,
econmicos, sociales y polticos que estn ntimamente relacionados entre s.
Las unidades didcticas, organizadas alrededor de un tema central que les proporciona unidad y
coherencia, se encuentran recogidas en los dos libros de texto bsicos recomendados en el curso:

2.- ORIENTACIONES PARA EL ESTUDIO DE LOS CONTENIDOS

3.- ORIENTACIONES PARA LA REALIZACIN DEL PLAN DE

ACTIVIDADES
3.1. Pasos para trabajar las unidades didcticas
Primero. Lea las unidades detenidamente. La lectura es un paso necesario antes del estudio de las
mismas.
Segundo. Estudie siguiendo un orden lgico. La visin cronolgica es muy importante en temas
culturales e histricos.
Tercero. Preste atencin a los cuadros y tablas cronolgicas. Su informacin es esencial para
entender la sucesin de procesos, movimientos y acontecimientos histricos.
Cuarto. Conteste a las peguntas que se incluyen en el apartado Exercises y lleve a cabo las tareas
asignadas. Estas actividades facilitan el proceso de aprendizaje y el contenido de todas ellas est
incluido en las distintas unidades y en la bibliografa recomendada.
Quinto. Consulte el glosario de trminos sobre el Mundo Anglfono cuando no le quede claro
algn trmino clave que aparezca en el texto.

3.2. Tipos de evaluacin y criterios

El examen final (ver 3.2.2), as como la evaluacin continua (que incluye las tareas de las
Pruebas de Evaluacin Continua o PEC y los ejercicios de autoevaluacin del apartado Exercises;
ver 3.2.1), servirn para medir los logros obtenidos por los estudiantes a lo largo del curso. Los
ejercicios de autoevaluacin de cada unidad forman parte del proceso de aprendizaje
individual y no son computados en la calificacin final de la asignatura, ya que no se
entregan como PEC. La calificacin final de la asignatura se calcular a partir de la suma de las
calificaciones de las PEC y de la prueba presencial o examen.

3.2.1. Evaluacin continua
La evaluacin continua ser llevada a cabo mediante las siguientes tareas:

Realizacin de todos los ejercicios de autoevaluacin incluidos en las unidades (apartado

Exercises).
Por cada semestre, el estudiante tendr que realizar una PEC (Prueba de Evaluacin
Continua), tarea computable para obtener el 20% de la calificacin final, que se enviar al
profesorado tutor a travs del curso virtual para su correccin. En total, por tanto, la
asignatura consta de dos PEC, y son las que se indican a continuacin:

Tarea para la PEC del segundo semestre (la fecha de entrega y las instrucciones especficas
se anunciarn en el Curso Virtual):
ELABORACIN DE UN COMENTARIO DE TEXTO SOBRE CULTURA E HISTORIA
DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS, a elegir entre los que documentos que facilitar el Equipo
Docente en el Curso Virtual.

Consejos prcticos para la realizacin del comentario de texto

Lase el texto varias veces, al menos tres. Una buena lectura es la base para un buen
comentario.

Subryese las ideas o temas principales del texto con distintos colores.

Utilcese algunos smbolos propios para remarcar las nociones ms importantes, para no
olvidar incluirlas en el comentario.

Hgase un esquema de la clasificacin del texto que introduzca las ideas o temas bsicos
relacionndolos entre s.

Se debe ser cuidadoso con la redaccin, presentacin, ortografa y trminos empleados para
que se comprenda con facilidad lo que queremos expresar.

Los ttulos de las pautas que se recomiendan para hacer un comentario no deben aparecer
en el comentario que hagamos.

Es conveniente calcular bien el tiempo que se va a dedicar, especialmente si se va a realizar

durante un examen.

3.2.2. Evaluacin final
Cada prueba presencial tendr una duracin de dos horas y no se permitir el uso de
diccionarios ni de ningn otro tipo de material. En las fechas indicadas para ello (consulte el
calendario oficial de exmenes) el alumnado realizar dos pruebas presenciales, una por semestre:
La primera prueba presencial (enero/febrero) versar sobre los contenidos anteriormente
indicados (ver seccin 1 de esta gua) del libro DEL PRIMER SEMESTRE: Oakland, John.

La segunda prueba presencial (mayo/junio) versar sobre los contenidos anteriormente
indicados (ver seccin 1 de esta gua) del libro DEL SEGUNDO SEMESTRE: Mauk, David &
Oakland, John. American Civilization. An Introduction. London: Routledge, 2013. (6th edition).
Cada una de las pruebas presenciales constar de dos partes:
- Una parte terica en la que el alumnado desarrolle unos contenidos incluidos en el temario, y
cuya calificacin mxima ser de 5 puntos.
- Una parte prctica en la que el alumnado realizar un comentario de un texto histricocultural, y cuya calificacin mxima ser de 3 puntos.
El formato especfico del examen se halla publicado en el Curso Virtual de la asignatura
(mock exam), donde tambin se pueden encontrar exmenes del curso pasado. La calificacin
mxima del examen escrito ser un 80% de la nota final. Es decir, 8 puntos ser la nota mxima
que el estudiante puede obtener en el mismo, siendo 5 puntos la nota mnima necesaria para
aprobar el examen. Es necesario superar las pruebas presenciales de ambos semestres para aprobar
la asignatura. En la convocatoria extraordinaria de septiembre se examinarn los estudiantes que
an tengan alguno de los semestres pendientes, bien porque lo hayan suspendido en la
convocatoria ordinaria, bien porque no se hayan presentado. En el examen se valorar tanto el
grado de conocimientos como la capacidad crtica y de sntesis, la claridad en la exposicin y la

concisin en la presentacin. Para solicitar revisin de examen, siga las instrucciones publicadas en
las P+F y el planificador del curso virtual.
Sistema de calificacin:
De acuerdo con lo establecido en el artculo 5 del Real Decreto 1125/2003, de 5 de septiembre,
por el que se establece el sistema europeo de crditos y el sistema de calificaciones en las
titulaciones universitarias de carcter oficial y validez en todo el territorio nacional, los resultados
de aprendizaje se calificarn en funcin de la siguiente escala numrica de 0 a 10, con expresin de
un decimal, a la que podr aadirse su correspondiente calificacin cualitativa:
0-4,9: Suspenso (SS)
5,0-6,9: Aprobado (AP)
7,0-8,9: Notable (NT)
9,0-10: Sobresaliente (SB)
La mencin de Matrcula de Honor podr ser otorgada a estudiantes que hayan obtenido una
calificacin igual o superior a 9.0. Su nmero no podr exceder del cinco por ciento de los
estudiantes matriculados en una materia en el correspondiente curso acadmico, salvo que el
nmero de matriculados sea inferior a 20, en cuyo caso se podr conceder una sola Matrcula de
Honor.

Glossary of Historical and Cultural Terms referred to the Anglophone World
Abolitionism: A movement to end the slave trade and emancipate slaves in Western Europe and
the Americas.
Albion: This is the oldest known name of the island of Great Britain. Today, it is still sometimes
used poetically to refer to the island.
Anglo Saxon Chronicle: It is a collection of annals in Old English chronicling the history of the
Anglo-Saxons. The annals were created in the 9th century during the reign of Alfred the Great.
Apprentice Boys: Protestant defenders of Derry, slammed the town gates shut when Jacobite
forces approached in 1688.
Arminianism: A school of esotericism within Protestant Christianity based on the theological

Archive: A collection of documents and records.
Autobiography: An individual's account of their life.
Bibliography: A list of works, including books, journals and essays, on a particular subject.
Biography: An account of an individual's life, written by another person.
Book Review: A critical examination of a text, usually including a summary of the work and
opposing views.
Context: The background and specific circumstances of a subject, such as an author's lifestyle, or
the weather during a train crash.
Discipline: The study, or practice, of a subject using a specific set of methods, terms and
approaches. History is a discipline.
Encyclopaedia: A written reference work composed of informative articles arranged
alphabetically.
History: Either the study of the past, or the product of our attempts to understand the past in order
to understand the present.
Historian: An individual who studies the past.
Historiography: Either the methods and principles used in the study of history, or the written
result.
Interdisciplinary: The study, or practice, of a subject, which applies the methods and approaches
of several disciplines.
Journal: A periodical, which normally deals with a specific issue, for instance, National
Geographic.
Multiculturalism: the belief that several different cultures can co-exist peacefully and rightfully in
a single country
