MDAS Lab 2

Pre-activity:
go to http://www.math.usu.edu/~schneit/CTIS/LawOfAverages/ and press get data several time in
order to see several realizations of the coin experiments. Then select die and press again get data
several times. I hope the law of large numbers or law of averages is clearer)
PART 1:
http://users.ece.gatech.edu/gtz/java/
Module 1 : Read the description and run the simulations for two values of the probability of head and
two values of the number of trials (10 and 30).
Modules 2: Read the description and see the simulations for the first 5 distributions available (choose
different values of the parameters and analyze the changes in the results)
Module 3: Read the description, define your own probability distribution function and study the
corresponding realization of the random variable (evolution in time) and the actual histogram. Draw
at least three different distributions.
Module 4: Read the description, and how Central Limit Theorem works for first 4 distribution functions
(Choose different parameters for each distribution).
Module 5: Read the description and check the consistency of the sample mean estimator.
PART 2:
http://statlab0.fon.bg.ac.yu/eng/eng/apletieng/resources/resources4.html
Go to The Poisson Process and run the simulation of the Exponential Experiments, selecting STOP 10,
then STOP 100, and then STOP 1000. Run the simulation of the Poisson Experiments, selecting STOP 10,
then STOP 100, and then STOP 1000.
Go to Special Distribution and run the simulation of the Normal Experiments, selecting STOP 10 and
then STOP 1000 (repeat the experiments for different values for mu and sigma). Run the simulation
of Student t Experiments, selecting STOP 10 and then STOP 1000. Repeat the experiment for n=1 and
n=10. Run the simulation of the Bivariate Normal Experiment.
PART 3:
http://www.probability.ca/jeff/java/utday/
See the first experiment: how the randomly-falling balls follow a normal distribution.

PART 4:
http://wise.cgu.edu/sdtmod/measures6.asp
Read the description. Press drag at the Criterion and move the mouse to the left and right. See the
corresponding hit rate and false alarm rate. Press drag under d and move the mouse to the left
and right. See the corresponding hit rate and false alarm rate and how the receiver operating
curve is changing.
Read the pdf file MDAS_Laborator_2b_teorie.pdf and then run again part 4.
