: Ay~ ay~ its a Red Light!

Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay wait a minute. Its a Red Light! In my own opinion, red light means
an emergency light and it gives me a signal that something is not right. Yes, indeed. Now, I
realized that I have to improve on my strategies, methods and approaches in Teaching English
as second language as well as the understanding of KSSR. During my second observation for
Language Arts, my supervisor mentioned about my lacking in the area of pedagogy for
teaching English and understand the need of KSSR. Apart from that, the conducted lesson
was not synchronised with the syllabus and failed to reflect on the language content that have
been taught in the topic. I accepted the comments with an open heart as I am still learning and
it takes several years to master and to be better in the subject matter.
In my point of view, the problems arisen because I did not pay much attention to the
content which has been taught by the lecturers during the last semesters. Sometimes, I also
confused on which activity is suitable for the stages in the lesson. My major weakness among
all language skills is teaching writing skill. For me, teaching writing needs a lot of process
and stages which sometimes led me to confusion. I was worried about this issue because I
might be teaching the wrong things to the pupils and they learnt something not right from me.
In relation to the problems, my supervisor has suggested to me to read more about
Communicative Language Teaching, supplemented by the Principles and Practice: English
Language Teaching Methodology and the Standard Document of KSSR. This is to prepare me
to become a knowledgeable and master the teaching of English as second language.
According to Chitravelu, et al. (2005), the starting point for all efforts in teaching English in
Malaysian schools must necessarily be an understanding of differences amongst pupils, as
well as knowledge and understanding how people learn a second language and what
processes are involved. Being able to apply all these efforts, I can become a proficient teacher
and able to teach effectively supplemented with appropriate teaching approaches, strategies

and methods. With that, master our subject matter and co-business made teaching more
effective and meaningful.
