Abstract
Flood is a main issue of concer for both developed and developing countries. Most of the
developing countries have low capacity to manage urban growth and climate changes
impacts. The higher number of vulnerable people suffer from the flood risks as_urban
growth combined with the severe rainfall experienced in Yangon city. The main objective
of the study is to conduct an assessment of flood risk across the study areas of Yangon city
in order to provide specific suggestions to reduce the risk in the context of urban
development. This research focuses on the spatial growth in the challenge to urban
development and socio-economic characteristics of people living in flood prone areas
while studying flood protection and mitigation planning and also taking flood risk
assessment in urban areas towards city development into consideration. Both qualitative
and quantitative flood data can be used for analysis, and analyzed in this research. An
integrated site-specific flood risk assessment approach was performed based on the souree~
pathway-receptor concept to assess the flooding risk in Yangon city.
It was found that urban flood in the investigated areas was not only caused by unexpected
heavy rainfall, but also due to lack of drainage system and unplanned human settlements.
‘Throughout this research, there have been many challenges to the inevitable future and
much knowledge is gained; poor management of urban growth, solid waste collecting
system and infrastructures such as drainage and sanitation systems in the investigated
areas. The main sources and consequences of floods and coping mechanisms adopted by
Jocal people during and after floods are important information for proper city planning. Lf
appropriate urban development and storm water runoff take place ~ adopting approaches
such as land use planning (zoning) and Source-Pathway-Receptor (SPR) measures
approach integrated with the existing local coping mechanisms in the investigated areas in
‘Yangon city for management of the storm water runoff against the flood risks.
