Subject/Course
Significant Content
(CCSS and/or others)
K-2-ETS1-2. Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a
given problem.
Collaboration
Communication
Other :
Critical Thinking
Project Summary
(include student role, issue,
problem or challenge, action
taken, and purpose/beneficiary)
Abstract: Second grade students will utilize their understanding of severe weather patterns in California to construct a bridge that can
withstand an earthquake. This eleven day project will allow students to become experts in building bridges through world explorations via
EarthCam, Bridge to Classroom simulation, and speaking with a civil engineer expert. Students will also be confident in their bridges through
blue printing, testing, analyzing, defending, and reflecting on their bridges.
Driving Question
How can we use our knowledge of severe weather patterns in California to construct a bridge that can withstand an earthquake?
Entry Event
The second graders will be told a story that has a problem in it. In order to solve the problem, the students will need to create a sturdy bridge
that can hold at least 10 plastic bears. With that in mind, students will work with their partner pair to first develop a blue print, followed by a
constructing the bridge.
