Program Notes
Sonata for Trumpet and Piano (1956) was one of Kennans few instrumental
works that accomplished publishing. It is a three movement sonata that remains
on collegiate trumpet repertoire lists even to this day. Along with this Sonata,
Kennan also wrote several books on counterpoint and orchestration, leaving the
musical world with much insightful knowledge on how to make quality music.
The piece was revised in 1986.

A Song from the Heart (2007) is one of Ewazens masterpieces in a sense that it
portrays all of deep beauty of the heart. His expressive elegance is clearly
demonstrated in this piece that is simple enough for students to perform, yet
formal enough for professional recitals. This piece was commissioned by
Marsha Caron for her husband on the occasion of his retirement, and was
premiered by Charles Schlueter in 2007.

Clarinet Sonata No. 2 Op. 120, by Johannes Brahms, was one of his last
instrumental pieces he wrote before he retired. In 1890, he was looking to retire
until he heard Robert Mlfeld, a virtuosic clarinetist, perform. Brahms then
wrote four more works including a quintet, trio, and two sonatas all using the
clarinet as the focus.

Clarinet Concerto written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791. This piece

was written for Anton Stadler who played the basset horn. The basset horn is a
version of the A clarinet with an extension of lower notes. No one knows where
the original score for the basset horn ended up, but the current adaptation for A
clarinet was published in 1802.

Song without Words (2011) is a "song" in the sense that it is a lyrical piece
which is expressing something, but it is "without words" because it is difficult to
describe what it is trying to express. With the piano only playing one note for
the entire piece, the song is a portrayal of a dialogue between two very intimate
people although they do not know what to say to each other. This piece won
the Grand Prize in the Reveille Trumpet Collectives International Composition
Competition in 2011.

Toot Suite (1981) is a six movement work that was originally written for
classical trumpet and jazz piano. Almost each of the six different movements
features a different horn, with exception of the fourth and sixth that both feature
the piccolo trumpet. This piece was premiered by French virtuoso trumpet
Maurice Andre in 1980. The jazz trio was later added to the score in 1981.

Camille Saint-Sans wrote Sonata for Clarinet, Op. 167, in 1921 during his last
year of life. He wrote Sonata for Oboe, Op. 166 first. Then he wrote the clarinet
sonata and finally a Sonata for Bassoon, Op. 168. He intended to write sonatas
for flute and English Horn but he died before he had the chance to write them.
Saint-Sans dedicated his Sonata for Clarinet to clarinet virtuoso Auguste Perier.
