ESTABLISHED GOALS
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.G.A.2
Find the volume of a right rectangular
prism with fractional edge lengths by
packing it with unit cubes of the
appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and
show that the volume is the same as would
be found by multiplying the edge lengths
of the prism. Apply the formulas
V=lwh
and
V = b h
to find volumes of right
rectangular prisms with fractional edge
lengths in the context of solving real-world
and mathematical problems.

Transfer
Students will be able to independently use their learning to

Q
Students will understand that
1.) What is volume?
Volume is the amount of space
2.) How are area and volume alike and
inside a 3-dimensional object and
different?

volume?

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.B.6
Solve real-world and mathematical
problems involving area, volume and
surface area of two- and three-dimensional
objects composed of triangles,
quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right
prisms.
BIG IDEAS
1.) We calculate volume and surface

2.) We can use what we know about
unit cubes and addition to
understand volume, and
understand why the formulas for
volume work.

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Summary of Key Learning Events and Instruction
Introduce unit using student notebooks. This notebook entry is titled Volume of a Rectangular Prism.
Explore the meaning of three dimensional by passing around three dimensional objects. Discuss three dimensions versus two.
Have students create a three dimensional rectangular prism from a two dimensional net.
Discuss volume and write the definition on the board for students to copy into their notebook. Use technology, the garden, and
the kitchen to write down real-life scenarios when we use volume. Share on board. Pass around a small unit cube to discuss
how volume is measured in cubic units or units cubed and compare to the measurement of area of two dimensional shapes.
Discuss attributes of a rectangular prism. Pass out 24 unit cubes for each student to use in creating their own rectangular
prisms, and the accompanying worksheet. Instruct students to use the unit cubes to build a prism, and discuss how else they
could find volume if given edge lengths. Ask increasingly more complex question culminating with students deriving their own
formula for volume of a rectangular prism and explaining their reasoning.
Practice finding volume when given edge lengths. Practice measuring edge lengths and then finding volume. Utilize rectangular
prisms around the classroom and the classroom garden for this. Connect volume of garden with measuring soil needed for each
garden.
Model how to find a missing edge length when given volume and two other edge lengths. Have students work together in class
and eventually make their own missing dimension problem for their partner to solve.
Complete Volume of a Rectangular Prism notebook entry.
