The major turning point in China-USSR Foreign Policy:

The major turning point in China-USSR foreign policy was when Nikita
Khrushchev starts De-Stalinization. Although Stalin and Mao never get alone
because of similar personalities, their similar believes and Maos respect for
Stalin brought both countries closer and maintains friendship. Mao was upset
when Stalin passed away in 1953, but Stalins death makes the relationship
between China and USSR friendlier, which was a good sign. This changed
when the new USSR leader Nikita Khrushchev by launching de-Stalinization in
USSR. Stalin was god-like to his people, so was to Mao too. Thats why Mao
found it so inappropriate when Khrushchev proposed the plan on public to tell
people stop worshipping Stalin. Mao also feels offended by Khrushchev as he
sees this as an attack of his leadership style; Differences in ideologies was
shown and seen by Mao because of de-Stalinization, how desperate
Khrushchev was to remove old (communist) ideas from his people and this is
why relationships between China and USSR starts to get worst. There were
also more disagreements from Mao towards USSRs actions since then.
The major turning point in China-USA Foreign Policy:
The major turning point in China-USA foreign policy was when China
supported the USs war effort in the Vietnam War. USA had been recognizing
Taiwan as the True China government since the Kuomintang had been
defeated by Mao, and the tension between US and China was noted because
of their extremely different ideologies, support for each others enemies was
also obvious and determined. But as the USSR starts turning against China,
Mao realizes that a new ally was needed to be included in the superpowers.
US although believe in a different policy, they were powerful and would not
be bad to start a relationship on. Thats why China funded the US on the
Vietnam war to show US that they were willing to establish relationships,
which was a good start of the US-China relationship because another good
news, Ping Pong Diplomacy and President Nixons visit to China, followed
behind after that which is a sign of better relationships.
China and the superpowers (USSR and USA)
Overall Chinas relationships with USSR and USA were pretty unstable and
therefore non reliable. The instability was due to power in my opinion. USSR
and China's relationship did not last not just because of Khrushchev and
Mao's different beliefs, but also the struggles of both wanting to be the
stronger communist country , so both would not back down to each other.
USA decided to establish friendship with China also because of fear that
China would grow stronger. It is official that China became one of the
superpowers when they successfully tested their hydrogen bomb, it would be
easier for the US to 'keep an eye on' if they were closer to China and make

sure they would not be more powerful than them. Because the relationships
were built without trust to each other, the relationship would not last and
therefore not reliable.
