1. Introduction
This is an assignment provided by a teacher of CAD and GIS at Niagara College. It is designed to
serves as an introduction to the use of AutoDesks AutoCAD MAP 3D and CAD and Mapping
standards, specifically this assignment undertake the creation and development of an Auto CAD Map
drawing using Feature Sources. Following the list of deliverables to be submitted and the purpose of
the assignment as provided by the terms of reference on the assignment.

1.1 Deliverables:

A hardcopy Technical Memo containing introduction, methodology and parameters used, report
details of the roads data table contained the map, conclusion
A hardcopy 3D image of the entire map using proper cartographic elements attached to the report
A Map Book of the Map published to a dwf file, saved to your student directory in the X: drive.
A copy of your dwg file saved to your student directory
A professional e-mail telling me where to find your map book and dwg file.

1.2 Purpose:

To gain a basic practical familiarity with Using Raster Images

To gain a basic practical familiarity with Connecting to Features
To gain a basic practical familiarity with Styling Images
To publish a Map Book

1.3 Data Required:

REDDING_CA.dem
Roads.sdf
Map2d.dwt
Map3d.dwt
Map Book 8.5 x 11 Classic.dwt
Map Book 8.5 x 11 Elegant.dwt
files located in X:\Data\GIS Resources\GIS Second Semester\GIS9305 - CAD and
GIS\Assignment 2

2 Methodology and Parameters Used:

I opened AutoCAD Map 3D 2013 and selected map2d.dwt. From Map Setup, I assigned NAD27
California State Planes, Zone 1(401) US Foot coordinate system to the map as required in the
assignment.
Figure 1 shows the assignment of the coordinate system

Figure 1: NAD27 California State Planes, Zone 1(401) is assigned to map2d.dwt

I connected Raster Source REDDING_CA1.dem to the map by selecting Connect to Data from
Display Manager, see Figure 2 and then selecting Add Raster Image from the pop up screen. The
coordinate system for the raster is automatically projected to the same selected in the previous step
(NAD27 California State Planes, Zone 1(401) US Foot).

To apply an appropriate height based theme palette to the raster Image. I altered the height based
theme palette to the raster image. The parameters that I choose for this attribute were 131-604,
distribution was equal and I chose to create 16 rules that replace all the existing rules. On specify a
theme palette I used a circular palette file for Aspect. See Figure 3.

To make the features stand up I gave exaggeration of 10x after experimenting several values on the
drawing. Figure 4 shows the map with the original exaggeration of 1 and Figure 5 shows the map with
exaggeration of 10 which really makes the elevation to stand up.

To create a polyline contour lines for the Rater Image, In Task Panel, Raster Image, I selected Create
Contour and selected 20 inches for elevation contour intervals, set every 4 th as a major contour and
labeled using ElevationIndex attribute see Figure 6 and Figure 7.

I applied Hill shading brightness and contrast of 10

I added a SDF connection to connect Roads.sdf vector data over the raster surface

I stylized the roads to make them stand out from the other features, to stylize the roads I changed
color to red and used expression to assign width to 0.05

Figure 8: Color red, width 0.05selected to stand up roads

To make only the major roads (ST_Type : ART, HWY, FWY, COL) visible from 3000 to Infinity I added
another scale range, one from 0 to 3000 and the other from 3000 to infinity.

In the range from 3000 to infinity I modified the style and to give them greater visibility I left color red
and used expression to assign width to 0.06. For this major roads and implemented an expression to
make only visible roads with ST_Type : ART, HWY, FWY, COL in that range, see Figure 9

Figure 9: Expression to make only visible roads with ST_Type: ART, HWY, FWY, COL

In the range from 0 to 3000 I modified the style and to give them good visibility I selected color orange
and used expression to assign width to 0.04. I Labeled the Street Names, I assigned Arial of10 for
font and I positioned appropriately on bg, bgBooton to have Street labels on top of the roads, see
Figure 10 and Figure 11.

To make Street Names visible for ST_TYPE : LOCAL, PVT ROAD, ART, HWY,FWY,COL and not for
ST_TYPE : UNK or ALLEY I implemented an expression, see Figure 12

I Plot a 3D view of map from a Layout using proper cartographic principals, I used layout and from
layout tools I inserted the scale bar which I adjusted and the north arrow, Title and Text references I
used the insert text from the AutoCAD Classic View and to plot the Leyend I used special paste
(copied as an image). See the resultant map in Figure 13

I created a new map book on Task Panel, Map Book as follows: On Source I selected Model Space
and name it myMapBook and on Settings used the MAP Book 8x11 Classic template provided and
set the Scale factor to 2000, see Figure 14

On Tiling schema I selected By Area and Area to tile on raster (selected both corners of the DEM),
see Figure 15

I used computers on school and using Virtual Machine working from home, I applied grid size and
grid labeling, I applied grid size and grid labeling, my company Logo, Legend, Key map, and updated
Title Block with scale but changes didnt stay correctly plotted, due to a possible bug in this version of
AutoCAD

Conclusions
Developing this assignment it was possible to obtain the result expected, not only the products required in
the terms of reference of the assignment but the learning objectives were reach since I gained:

Basic practical familiarity with Using Raster Images

Basic practical familiarity with Connecting to Features
Basic practical familiarity with Styling Images
And I learned how to create and publish a Map Book
