Computer Generated Imagery

What are the features of your chosen animation product?
The video clip I watched was the Avengers. The type was computer
generated imagery (CGI)
The dimensions of the clip were 3D and the size dimension were
854x480@24. the animation consisted of both vector and bitmap images.
The time of length for the Avengers video clip was 4.43. There were many
special effect used in the clip of film. The hulk which is a character in the film
uses morphing to turn from a normal human being into a destructive green
monster. They camera crew also use a varied range of different angles to
capture eye twisting effects; which show things that aren't really are and
make things look bigger than they actually are! as well as using these effects
they also use motion blurs, they also reduce the frames per second , to make
actions look slower; like when characters are dodging huge missiles. When
characters are in battle and are throwing huge vehicles around they use
certain sound effects to enhance the power of the character and they also
use sound effect for explosions. As sound effects are also used for characters,
such as how iron man talk when he is engulfed in the red, bulletproof robot ,
self controlling machine.
Different types of audio is used throughout the clip like music for the film,
sounds of iron man taking off and spaceships. The clip is saved as a Mpeg-4.

Computer Generated Imagery

What are the purposes of the animation product?
Computer generated imagery serves many purposes. One of those are to
entertain its audience which is varied. The avengers film is directed at an audience
of all ages as it contains sci-fi characters which younger age groups will find
amusing. The characters are also heroes in the movie which will entertain a
younger audience. They will look up to these people as role models and try to
imitate their heroic moves.
As well as all of these the avengers movie also has the purpose to evoke emotion.
This can be seen as, while watching the movie it gives the effect to the audience
on what is going to happen. It also evokes emotion by the destructions of
buildings, vehicles exploding and people getting hurt.
Another purpose for the product is for money. The company making the film is
working to earn their money from the box office sales.

Review how the CGI animation is fit for

purpose and the intended audience
1.

2.
3.

4.

5.

What is the animation for? For entertainment to a audience. Avengers is aimed both
at children and for adults.
Who is the animation meant to appeal to? I.e. Interest groups, gender, age etc The
animation is meant to appeal to teenagers, adults and children too. Women made up
40% of the audience.
What is the intended impact upon the audience (how they are supposed to make the
audience feel) The creators of avengers have made the film so that it leaves people in
suspense, such as when a hero has been beaten. And what will happen next; will he
come back and defeat the hero or not.
How does the animation appeal to the desired audience? For example, what style and
approach has the animator used? They have used a distinctive colour scheme which
has made the looks of the character appeal to the viewers. they have also used
scenery that a battling film has; blown up cities, flying aircrafts.
How successful are the animations? Do they appeal to the correct audience? In my
opinion it depends upon the way the animation has been designed, If it is done in a
way where its enjoyable and has an interesting story; it will be successful. It also
depends on which type of audience the animation is aimed at.

Discuss the strengths and weaknesses

of the CGI animation
1.

For the CGI animation, discuss the 2 strengths and 2 weaknesses (considering
the features and the intended purpose and audience)

Powerful marketing strategy. Many people are interested in these types of animations
which are produced from comic strips. this creates a huge audience that are willing to pay
to view the film.
Another strength is that, film makers would be able to make the film as interesting as it is,
without the help of CGI. This is due to the fact, that they wouldnt be able to blow up
building or create any havoc as they do in real life.
A weakness is that

2. Also comment on any suggested improvements.

There are many improvements for CGI animation.
One of these is that the animation needs to be made to look more realistic. This is because
some images make human skin look like plastic.
Also images of characters, focusing on their face, it is visible that it is not real. This is due to
the fact of the face of the character being stiff.

Motion Capture
What are the features of your chosen animation product?
The dimensions of my chose animation (baseball pitching) are 557x480.
There were a total of 11 frames per second. The resolution of my
chose animation was 418x360@15. The total length of the vide was
approximately 14 seconds. There were no actual special effects as the
actor was performing the acts himself. But the real effects came in
when the camera transmitted the images on to the computer. As well
as all of this there were no speeches or sound effects. The only sound
that was audible were the action of the arm movements and the
sound of the ball hitting off the wall when it was thrown. There was
only one character; the male who was performing the act. The only
object that was used was the ball that was being used; which was
thrown across the room.

Motion Capture
What are the purposes of the animation product?

The only purpose for this animation was for the producers to capture the
performance and use the digital copy of it to edit it, add effects such as
sound, change actors looks/costume. Once this is all done the animation
will be added to many other animations to create a film which will be used
for entertainment/education purposes.

Discuss the strengths and weaknesses

of the Motion capture animation
1. For the Motion capture animation, discuss the 2 strengths
and 2 weaknesses (considering the features and the intended
purpose and audience)
More rapid, sometimes even real time results can be obtained. The amount of
work does not vary with the complexity or length of the performance to the same
degree when using traditional techniques. Specific hardware and special
programs are required to obtain and process the data.
The cost of the software and equipment, personnel required can be prohibitive
for small productions.
The capture system may have specific requirements for the space it is operated
in.

2. Also comment on any suggested improvements

Equipment costs are too high which puts some companies at a disadvantage as they
cant afford this type of animation production.
