Students introduced to phonics pattern oi and oy, as well as aw.
Lesson Goal:
Given a reading passage, students will demonstrate phonics and word study skills in order
to read words with long and short vowel sounds with 80% accuracy in 4 of 5 trials
1.RF.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Lesson Objective:
After being introduced to diphthong oi and oy, students will be able to decode 3
unknown words using this phonics pattern with 100% accuracy.
Materials Needed:
Reading Triumphs MacMillan/McGraw pg. 218-225
Practice Book pg. 214
Write on Board
Word Cards: eight, open, pretty, robots, seven
Contextual Factors:
Students use fix up strategies and blending, chunking to sound out unknown words.
A. The Lesson
1. Introduction (2-5 minutes)
a. Imagine that you woke up in the middle of the night and you saw all of
your toys and stuffed animals dancing around the room? What would
you say/do?
b. We will be reading a story today about some toys like to have fun
when their owner is asleep. We will be using our knowledge of the oi
and oy sound to decode unfamiliar words in the story.
c. Knowing how to read words with the oi and oy sound will help you
read other stories as well.

d. Today we will be reading the story Toys at Night I want you to pay
close attention to words that make the oi sound. I also want you to use
the pictures in the story to help you understand the text.
i. Lets read our I can statements:
1. I can read words with oy and oi such as toy and join.
2. I can use pictures to help with comprehension.
3. I can use strategies like chunky monkey and stretchy
snake to decode unknown words
2. Content (10-15 minutes)
a. Lets review: What sound does this letter combination make (write
the letters oy on the small write-on board) Assist as needed. so if I
make this word (Toy, Troy,

boy, joy) can you tell me what it

says? What about these letters? (oi) Can you tell me what this word is?

(join, coin, spoil) Very good.


b. Lets review our sight words (show group of cards to each student,
allow them to answer, assist as needed)
i. (robots, pretty, open, seven, eight)
c. Before we begin to read, lets take a look at the pictures in the story.
What do you think is happening in this story just by looking at the
pictures? (picture walk through story)
d. Okay, lets read to see if we were right about what is happening in the
story.
e. Allow student to read one page at a time, alternating. Students should
be using chunking, blending, fix up strategies.
f. Ask questions as students read to aid in comprehension, relate to
personal experience.
g. Once students finish reading, introduce practice page.
3. Closure: (2 minutes)
a. Today we read about some mischievous toys and used our knowledge
of the combination oi and oy to sound out unfamiliar words. Lets

revisit our I can goals: Did you read words with oy and oi such as toy
and join? Did you use pictures to help you understand the story? Did
you use strategies like chunky monkey and stretchy snake to read
unknown words?

a. Provide assistance as needed for students when sounding out unfamiliar words.
