Tolerance vs. Appreciation: Raising Awareness for

Diversity

Need
Data Analysis
Why this plan
is needed?

Need appreciation as base.

Define the
Purpose
How will this
plan help?

The purpose of this lesson is to help students

understand that tolerance not sufficient because it
implies that all we need to do is put up with
people. Appreciation is the goal, which is notably
different than acceptance. Rather than teaching
acceptance, that one must agree or acknowledge
that anothers belief is true, one will teach
appreciation, which is to be grateful for,
understand, increase in value, and recognize.

This year at NWMS, school personnel have asked

their local workforce development what students
lack once they graduate and look for work. It
appears that while students are academically
ready, they lack in soft skills. Therefore, NWMS
and Workforce development have joined together
to teach each student about four soft-core skills:
communication; work ethic; personal ethics and
teamwork. In a world that is becoming more
diverse, tolerance may not be sufficient enough.
Arun Gandhi (grandson to Mahatma Gandhi) thinks
one of the biggest challenges of our time is to
build meaningful relationships between people
that fosters respect, understanding, acceptance,
and appreciation. Therefore, there is a need to
incorporate learning appreciation for differences to
further better communication, work ethic, personal
ethics, and teamwork.

Target group
What will they
do?

Who: Not in Our School group, which is a group

formed to help provide leadership in the school.
This past year, this group provided a lesson on
bullying where they asked students where bullying
existed most in the school and then worked
together to create an active plan to stop bullying.
The 7th graders in this group will be in charge of
lessons and discussion for the rest of the 7th grade
class. Teachers will also have a small part to play
by facilitating a discussion from questions given to
them with students after the iMovie. The school
counselor(s) will teach and work with the Not in
Our School group about the information
developed that the group will then teach the rest
of the 7th grade. School counselor(s) will also
oversee the actions of the 7th grade students.
Lastly, stakeholders from Workforce development
will consult and collaborate with school counselors
to develop the information being taught to the 7th
grade students to make sure both parties are on
the same page.
Target Group: Reach all 7th grade students at
NWMS.
What will they do?: Results from the View of
School Climate survey will be used as a preassessment that will assist students in knowing
what to do. Students will then campaign
throughout school during an Awareness Month.
There will be bulletin boards decorated with
cultural information in the 7th grade hallway.
Additionally, 7th grade students from the Not in
Our School group will present an iMovie based on
their book The Outsiders where they interview
classmates about which character they relate to
best and why. Students may say I can relate to
(Outsider character) because The iMovie will
then be shown during SLT and teachers will be
given structured discussion questions to ask
following the video.

C2.SS. 6: Use effective collaboration and
cooperation skills.
C2.SS.9: Demonstrate social maturity and
behaviors appropriate to the situation and
environment.

What readings, assignments, reflections are

required?
The 7th grade class is already reading The
Outsiders.
o At NWMS, the population is of the
haves (higher socio-economic status
now called the populars) and the
have-nots (lower socio-economic and
on free and reduced lunch), but not a
lot of students in the middle class.
o Using The Outsiders for appreciating
diversity, not only with ethnicity and
culture, but also to look at subcultures
in their own town or community, could
help increase appreciation for all
students in NWMS.

o The teachers will be provided with

discussion questions based on the
video shown that will engage 7th grade
students in personal reflection about
themselves and how to better connect
with each other and, hopefully, the
broader community.
Group leaders will have an initial meeting
with the school counselor(s) to learn about
this initiative, their roles, and brainstorm for
the video and potential blog.

How will you assess outcome?

Create a rubric with information the
stakeholders discussed that they would like
to be addressed in this topic in order to
ensure that most, if not all areas, are
addressed. Rubric will also address areas of
growth that are seen through the School
Climate Survey
Reflection (could be short survey with openended questions), which will be submitted
through the Google survey
Pre and post-tests regarding students
knowledge of respecting others, empathy,
self-awareness, and valuing the differences
in others.
At a later period during the school year, a
survey will be distributed to the 7th grade
students in order to try to understand the
impacts of this lesson over time.

(Late November)
Meet with Workforce development to discuss
various workplace scenarios and
incorporation of soft skills into the lesson.
(December)
School counselor(s) will call meeting with
Not in Our School group. (January when
school starts)
Schedule and meet with this group to go
over the training and requirements of this
years lesson they are going to provide.
(Mid-January)
Not in Our School group will provide the
lesson to the rest of the 7th grade. (Late
January, early February)
Create the video. (Late January, early
February)
Work with teachers to see when to present
movie and discuss the movie. (December)
Potentially create a blog with 7th grade
students where they can refer back and add
to as this lesson takes root in them (Positives
of students or ideas) (Late January, early
February)

Deliver
Reflect
Document

The counselor will reflect after meeting with

stakeholders and gathering their insight.
Additional times the counselor will reflect
include: after training the 7th grade leaders,
after the 7th graders have taught the other
7th grade students, and points in the future
after collecting data to see how the school
community feels and acts in regard to
acceptance.

Student Google surveys will be used, as well

as responses from 7th grade leaders.
Counselor will also meet with stakeholders
(Workforce development, teachers) to
receive their feedback.
Assess & Evaluate
Using the pre and post-tests, counselor will
have concrete data in what the students
have learned.
Counselor can also observe student behavior
before and after the lesson is given to see if
there have been any noticeable changes.
The counselor will also ask for feedback from
students and other stakeholders in the
program (teachers, Workforce) to see what
they thought of the delivery of the lesson
and how much the students learned, as well
as if this knowledge gained is meeting the
needs.
