Fairy tale Measuring

First Grade
The central focus of this learning experience
is Math. There is a language and literacy
component to it as well since students will be
working in pairs.
As a result of this activity students will be
able measure the length of an item using
multiple copies of a smaller object.

This activity is appropriate for First Grade
because it asks them to measure using
nonstandard measuring units, which is
developmentally appropriate for their age.
This activity helps students meet the
objective by giving them an adequate
amount of practice measuring various items.
This activity will be introduced as part of a
whole group lesson. Prior to this activity,
there would have been a lesson introducing
nonstandard units of measurement and the
proper way to measure items. Students will
work in pairs for this activity, taking turns
between being a recorder and the one who
measures.

Anticipatory Set (How will you
introduce the activity? Describe
plans to get students interested
and engaged in the activity. In
addition describe how you plan to
activate students prior
knowledge)

The activity will be introduced by discussing

what measurement is and how to measure
objects using smaller copies of one small
object. For the purposes of this activity, unifix
cubes will be used as the nonstandard unit of
measurement.
Students will be measuring images from fairy
tales that they have already seen in the
books they have read together.

Instructional Input (Procedures

This is an outline of all the steps
needed to complete this activity.
Be as detailed and
comprehensive as possible)

1. Begin lesson on what measurement is

and how unifix cubes can be used to
measure items.
2. Model correctly using unifix cubes to
measure drawings on the board.
3. Tell students they will be measuring
with unifix cubes various pictures of
objects and characters they have seen
in fairy tales.
4. Show students the packet containing
the pictures and how to use the
recording sheet to record their
measurements.
5. Pair up students and give each of them
a baggie of unifix cubes and a
measuring packet to take to their
tables.
6. Take pictures of students as they are
measuring to be used for outside
bulletin board.

Instructional Resources and

Materials (What resources and
materials will be used in this
activity? List any text, digital
resources, and materials used)

Baggie of unifix cubes for each pair of

students

recording sheet
Pencils

HW- have students measure object

After completing the activity, students will
