Cold Environments

What are the climatic characteristics

of a cold environment?
Last lesson:
End of rivers
This lesson:
1. Distribution of cold environments
2. Types and characteristics of cold environments
3. Exam practice throughout
Independent study (see last slide):
Research reasons for changes in climate and say how cold
environments could be affected in the future

Key questions for Cold Environments

topic
1. What processes and factors give cold
environments their distinctive
characteristics?
2. Why are cold environments considered to be
fragile?
3. What are the issues associated with the
development of cold environments?
4. How can cold environments be managed to
ensure sustainability?

Where are cold environments found?

Activity 1
Turn to pg109 of little orange book
It shows a climate classification world map
Look for the light and dark blue areas marked ET
and EF, and also purple areas Dfc
Look on the key to see what this means
If you were given a map like to look at in an exam,
what 4-mark question might you be asked?

Describe the distribution of cold

climates [4]
The map shows different types of cold climate
including
In the extreme North and South, x climate is found
and includes locations such as
In latitudes of between 60-80N, x climate is found.
This climate is also found in locations such as
Cold boreal forests are found

Explain this distribution [6]

Latitude
(This is about WHERE locations are in
relation to the Equator)
Altitude
(This is about HEIGHT of the land)

Latitude

Altitude

Explain the distribution of cold

climates [6]
Activity 2
What sentence starters could you use to help answer
this question?
Come up with sentence starters on your table which
would help someone to achieve 6 out of 6. (You should
push them to talk about latitude and altitude and give
examples).
Now swap with another table and individually use their
sentence starters to explain why cold places are where
they are.

Describe the climatic characteristics of

a cold environment [6] May 2011 part b)
There are THREE types of cold environment
that you are going to look at.
You need to know the specific traits
(characteristics) which are linked to each one.
First impressions: how would you approach this
question?

Climatic characteristics include

Activity 3
Using pg90-91 of yellow/blue OCR book,
fill in the factsheets to summarise:
- Glacial climatic characteristics
- Periglacial climatic characteristics
- Mountainous climatic characteristics
Try to include keywords like albedo and
katabatic winds

Glacial (polar) climates

Named locations:
Temperatures

Precipitation

Other (eg.
Winds)

Periglacial climates
Named locations:
Temperatures

Precipitation

Other (eg.
Winds)

Mountainous (upland) climates

Named locations:
Temperatures

Precipitation

Other (eg.
Winds)

Purple booklets
Now answer:
Describe the climatic characteristics of a
cold environment [6]
From May 2011 paper, part b)

Similarities and differences

Although these characteristics vary, the
one factors that all these places have in
common is that at some stage in the year
(or in the past), they are COLD.
This means that they have certain
processes which dominate across all of
them.

What are the causes of global warming? (look for human
and physical reasons)
In what ways might global warming affect the climate of
cold environments?
