T he line between tradi- tional and self-pub- lishing is blurring, and this is good news for authors willing to

seize a new opportunity. That is one of the major themes of this year’s uPublishU at BookExpo America, the indie publishing show held at New York City’s Javits Center on Saturday, May 30. Given the success of last year’s structure, this year’s show will follow the same mulitrack approach. It offers a schedule of workshops for three distinct self-publishing audi- ences: newbies publishing their first book, those focused on marketing

and attracting readers, and more experienced authors working on their third or fourth (or 15th) book. “We have some attendees who are basi- cally on book one, or about to start, and on the other end of the spectrum, we have authors who are on book seven, eight, nine,” says Sally Dedecker, who is educa- tion director for BEA and is organizing uPublishU. “Then there are authors who we could put the label ‘hybrid’ on— they’ve been traditional, and they’re starting to look at self-publishing.” These hybrid authors are a particular focus for this year’s show. As self-pub- lishing has become more sophisticated and traditional publishers have moved to embrace indie authors, the distinction between these two worlds has become less distinct—making it easier for au-

Kenneally sees this as a marked shift from the sense of “triumphalism” that the

success of the self-publishing industry has fostered—the view that “authors, at long last, were set to roll over traditional publishers” and help indie publishing dominate, and perhaps replace, the

traditional system. Instead, publishers have moved to embrace self-publish- ing, with their own indie imprints and more flexible terms for authors who have established themselves outside the traditional model.

Attendees at uPublishU will also learn how to apply the marketing

strategies and data analysis used by larger publishing houses to their own self-publishing efforts. Workshops such as “Book Marketing Best Prac- tices” and “Sell More E-Books: Tips & Tricks Based on Actual Data” will help authors consider how they promote and sell their books. “Looking at purchasing informa- tion has always been part of what traditional publishers do, and indie authors have to start doing the same thing,” Dedecker says. Her examples include tracking data about what genre is trending up or down, or what styles of cover art are selling well. “This

thors to move between the two models. With that in mind, this year’s opening session is titled “The Rise of the Hybrid Author,” which delves into the opportu- nities on either side of the publishing equation, and why it can benefit an author to move between the two. Chris Kenneally, director of business development for the Copyright Clearance Center, who will be moderating the open- ing panel, describes this as a change in perspective for authors. Rather than view- ing traditional and self-publishing as mu- tually exclusive options, authors are seek- ing out revenue from both sides, signing with major publishers for some projects, and going indie for others, depending on their goals for each project and their lon- ger-term career aims.

is all part of what indie authors have to consider.” In another session, titled “The New Publishing Timeline,” authors discuss how to make the biggest impact ahead of the release of a book and e-book. This panel will walk attendees through creat- ing early buzz, generating preorders, and being proactive long before the book is actually released. To this end, Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords, will be leading a workshop on how authors can hit the e-book best- seller list by making preorders more cen- tral to a book’s promotional strategy. “Preorders are one of the most powerful

tools available to indie authors, but despite the great benefits, most au- thors aren’t yet doing them, and don’t yet know how to use them,” Coker says. “I share simple step-by-step instructions for how to make the next book release more successful.” Coker will also be running the related workshop “How to Reach More Readers in the E-book Market,” in which he explains how an author can navigate the increasingly crowded e-book landscape. This will consist of “20 tricks, tips, and tactics for how indies can publish with greater pride, satisfaction, and long-term success,” according to Coker. Coker emphasizes that the self-pub- lishing market has matured—and this maturation will be a central theme to this year’s show. After exponential growth from 2008 to 2012, self-publish- ing has begun to slow down, something

Coker sees as an inevitable stage in its development. “The easy days are behind us,” Coker says. But he adds that this should not dis- courage authors. “The readers are out there, and they’re buying books. All a writer has to do is publish like a profes- sional. That means honoring the reader by writing a great book that takes the reader to an emotionally satisfying extreme.”

up sales directly from an author’s Face- book or LinkedIn landing page. Ratzlaff explains that even though the first phase of social media marketing for authors was connecting to readers, authors must consider what’s next: play- ing publicist, advertising director, and sales team (or delegating these tasks to the right people). “The reality is you need help,” agrees Dedecker, pointing to the “Building Your Team” session, which will look more deeply at why and how an author can expand her effort beyond a one- person program. “If you’re going to get discovered, you really need to pick your team.” Attendees can build their team right at the conference by visiting uPublishU’s Author Marketplace. Organizations such as Lulu, Indie Reader, Book Grabbr, the Editorial Freelance Association, and BookBaby will be on hand to describe how they can help writers take their game to the next level. Each will have a table, offering information as well as specials and discounts for attendees. Authors will also have a chance to net- work with panelists and service providers during the show’s lunch break. Since the schedule only allows for an hour at lunch, Dedecker has eschewed the usual lunch- time speaker for a more active, and casual, period for networking. “It’s going to be a networking lunch, where every- one can share and talk and where a lot of authors will pick up little tidbits of in- formation not only from fellow authors, but from the speakers and some of the exhibitors.”

Opportunities Further Afield

Maturing Industry

Coker’s assessment of the industry was echoed by other speakers and panelists taking part in this year’s uPublishU:

while self-publishing is maturing, with more opportunities than ever, it is also more competitive than ever. “It’s easier than ever before to publish, but it’s harder than ever before to sell,” says Cindy Ratzlaff, brand marketing specialist for Brand New Brand You and longtime publishing veteran, who will be hosting the session “Advanced Social Media Strategies.” She adds, “A handful of authors are selling tens of thousands of books, and tens of thousands of authors are selling a handful of books.” Ratzlaff says that successful authors now “don’t just upload their book to one sales site and tweet about it. They have a sales funnel, a series of next books in the works, a remarketing plan, and they’re building platforms from which to pro- mote that go beyond Facebook and a blog.” Though most authors have a basic grasp of Facebook, Twitter, and Insta- gram, they are now at a point where a deeper dive is valuable. During her workshop, Ratzlaff will help authors learn how to share links and see what drives sales on social media, and she will offer case studies about the successful use of social media. Among the points Ratzlaff will be dis- cussing is the new online tool Heyo, which allows authors to offer a PDF of their books to Facebook fans who type buy in the comments section—sending a link directly to them through their Face- book account. She will also discuss the new point-of-sale strategies and setting

The growth of international sales will also be discussed at this year’s uPubli- shU, with a session dedicated to this very topic. After authors work to get their books into industry databases and the major e-book retailers, libraries, and book stores, the next step is to consider foreign rights, translations, and other options outside the U.S.

“There is a global e-book market that is just on the cusp of exciting new growth,” says Mark Lefebvre, director of self-publishing and author relations for Kobo, who will be hosting the panel “International Markets and Indies.” He compares the state of international publishing to what the U.S. market looked like three or four years ago. He points out that Kobo is seeing huge growth not only in English-language markets outside the U.S.—Canada, Aus- tralia, New Zealand, the U.K.—but also in non-English-language territories such as France, Italy, and the Netherlands. Lefebvre adds that this focus on opportunities beyond the U.S. comes at a time when the self-publishing market appears to be stabilizing. “Indie authors are recognizing two key factors for success: going wide with their titles—ensuring their work is available at all retailers globally and not just a single U.S.-based company—and

Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon, Combs says she began writing in middle school. She found she “never clicked well” with the other kids, so she turned to reading for company and eventually to writing. Her process is straightforward, she says. When she isn’t at work or playing Grand Theft Auto V, she writes by composing large chunks, which she then goes back over and edits—a process she repeats un- til the book is complete. Editing is done with the help of two close friends. “They help me with plot holes, planning, proof- reading, and editing,” she notes. Combs and her friends design the covers them- selves using Photoshop. As for the reaction of her friends and family to The Highlander’s Touch, she says the response has been varied. “Most are like, ‘Woah, that’s so cool!’ while others are like, ‘What, you write porn now or something?’” Her advice to other writers is to have an emotional support system in place, and to use it when needed. “Most times I use my dog just to get my mind off of things, and when I come back from the cuddles, my mind is more clear,” she says, adding that this helps with the stress of wondering, “Am I eally good enough to be doing this?”

Luckily, she notes, she also gets emotion- al support from her readers: “Thank God I have some of the best fans an author can

And soon, her double life becomes in- creasingly complicated. The novel is awash with Scottish phrases and termi- nology, such as dirks and lasses although the author lives in Kentucky—far from

How Authors Should Evaluate Their Choices

BY JANE FRIEDMAN

S ince 2013, I’ve been main- taining a chart on the key book publishing paths for authors. My goal is to help people cut through the

Will the book be pitched to retailers or distributors by a sales team? This means that the publisher calls on specific retail accounts and distributors to secure orders for the book in advance of publication. This step is very unlikely unless there’s investment in a print run as well as a marketing plan.

How will your books be distributed? Anyone can get a book distributed through Ingram and Amazon via print-on-demand, as long as the files meet certain basic stan- dards. If your book is listed via Ingram, all book retailers can place orders for it. (That doesn’t mean your book will ever sit on a physical shelf, but it can be ordered through a store.) If a publishing service touts being distributed through Ingram, that’s not necessarily a selling point—you can do that on your own. It’s rare for pay-for-play services to actively sell and distribute physical copies to bookstores, which is costly and requires industry contacts. (A few are Greenleaf Book Group, She Writes Press, InkShares, and Matador.) But print distribution isn’t the only reason to work with a hybrid publisher. In the case of firms that focus on e-book distribution, authors must assess their own strengths and consider whether their books would be more successful if they had a service partner supporting them. When evaluating a service, look for signs that it will be a good business part- ner and likely to produce a successful book. Due to the extreme ease of publish- ing and distributing books in digital for- mat, anyone can put out a shingle and call him- or herself a publisher. So here are

some additional questions to consider:

confusion of the increasing number of options available—from traditional publishing to self-publishing, and every- thing in between. It’s that in between part that’s vexing. It’s become nearly impossible to catego- rize certain publishers and services; some wish to avoid being labeled altogether. They consider themselves innovators, providing an important alternative for authors. Some in the in- dustry have been using the label hybrid publisher for these services, but that’s

no help—not when every hybrid has a different business model.

What’s the editing process like? Some services will take exactly what you give them and publish it, without any editing. Even if that sounds appealing, this shows a lack of professionalism. Vir- tually no manuscript is ready for prime time without some editorial work.

What marketing and promotion sup- port do their titles receive? Ask what the service’s baseline marketing plan is for each title. Does it send out review copies? Does it write a press release? Does it submit the book to media outlets for coverage? Find out the bare minimum it commits to, and if it does little more than make the title available for sale, rethink why you want to publish with it.

Can you speak to recent authors?

Authors need specialized knowledge

of

the industry to evaluate these hybrids

effectively and to understand the under- lying value of a service and whether it has the power to make a difference in their book’s success. Here are questions I use

to help authors evaluate their choices (I will be using the terms publisher and service interchangeably):

This can be the best litmus test of all. Are other authors pleased with the publisher’s communication and level of involve- ment? How much value did the pub- lisher add to the process? Finally, before committing to any ser- vice, get clear answers on costs, and read your contract carefully. If things go wrong, know when and how you can hit eject (and at what cost) so you can pursue

Will there be a traditional print run— and who’s paying for it?

A

print run equates to an investment—

someone is taking a financial risk on the

book’s success. Having a specific number

of

books printed anticipates sales and

marks confidence that the book will be

actively stocked in bricks-and-mortar stores. Authors shouldn’t pay for their own print runs unless they know exactly how and to whom those books will be sold.

The first wave of independent publishing in the digital age promised a golden age of reading and writing. Many caught up in the excitement were swift to proclaim the demise of traditional publishing models. What we see in 2015 is a world that has found room for both the upstarts and the established players. Authors frequently migrate from indie status to traditional houses and back again. Authors are making choices based on personal and professional ROI assess- ments—and not only about revenue potential but also their long-term career goals. Depending on the book and the trajectory of an author’s career, independent publishing may be the right choice now, or a year from now. The average book today sells only about 250 copies per year and 3,000 in its lifetime. Improve your odds of becoming a successful author by pro- ducing a business plan for your book before you write a word. As you do, you develop an author attitude, craft a marketable book idea, and evaluate your idea and yourself through an ac- quisitions editor’s lens. You also de- velop a career plan to help you reach your goal: successful authorship. Learn how to determine if your book is not only a great creative idea but also marketable product—a viable busi- ness venture. Go through the author training process, the foundation for creating books that sell. This nine- step evaluation tool helps you deter- mine if your book is ready to go to market and if you are ready to become an author. This session teaches you how to use the sections of a book pro- posal—the industry standard when it comes to a business plan for a book— as a process to train yourself to see both the creative and business aspects of writing and publishing a book. Based on Nina Amir’s book, The Author Training Manual, Writer’s Digest Books, March 2014. Session takeaways: learn how to discover if your book idea is marketable, find out how to decide if you are cut out to write and market a successful book; discover what readers want; learn how to produce a successful book; take the nine steps in the author training pro- cess; see yourself and your idea through a publishing professional’s eyes; find out why you shouldn’t write your book as soon as you get the idea.
