Computer Terminology

USB (Universal Serial Bus) - is a flash drive, and a


storage device (flash memory with an integrated USB
interface) for files and documents. USB flash drives are
typically removable and rewriteable, and are physically
much smaller than an optical disc.
Hard Drive a high-capacity, self-contained storage
device containing a read-write mechanism (plus one or
more hard disks), inside a sealed unit. (A.k.a.hard disk
drive).
Motherboard - a printed circuit board containing the
principle components of a computer or other device, with
connectors into which other circuit boards can be slotted.
Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a type of interface
that allows users to interact with electronic devices
through graphical icons and visual indicators such as
secondary notation, as opposed to text-based interfaces,
typed command labels or text navigation.
Insulators is a substance or an object that resists the
flow of electrons or electricity.
Conductors is a substance or an object that conducts
electricity or the flow of electrons very well.
Binary Code is a coding system using the binary digits
0 and 1 to represent a letter, digit, or other characters in
a computer or other electronic devices.

Binary Digit is one two digits (0 or 1) in a binary


system of notation.
Computer is an electronic device for storing and
processing data, typically in binary form, according to
instructions given to it in a variable program.
Keyboard is a panel of keys that operates a computer
or a typewriter.
Byte a group of binary digits or bits (usually eight)
operated on as a unit, and is considered as a unit of
memory size.
Switch is a device for making and breaking the
connection in an electric circuit.
Load is the generic term for something in the circuit
that will draw power. Its normally the largest power draw
and most components in a circuit are there to support the
load. Anything that uses electricity to do work will draw
the current.
Operating System is the software that supports a
computers basic functions, such as scheduling tasks,
executing applications, and controlling peripherals.
Spreadsheet is an electric document in which data is
arranged in the rows and column of a grid and can be
manipulated and used in calculations.
Search Engine is a program that searches for and
identifies items in a database that corresponds to
keywords or characters specified by the user, used

especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide


Web.
Cell is a box formed by the intersection of a row and
column in a worksheet or a table, in which you enter
information. The set of coordinates that a cell occupies on
a worksheet. For example, the reference of the cell that
appears at the intersection of column B and row 3 is B3.
Computer Program is a list of instructions that tells a
computer what to do. Everything a computer does is done
by using a computer program. Some examples of
computer programs: A web browser like Mozilla Firefox
and Apple Safari can be used to view web pages.
Ergonomics is the study of peoples efficiency in their
working environment.
Netiquette is the correct or acceptable way of
communicating on the Internet.
