Seeking a point where M odern Jazz, Contemporary M usic

and Free Jazz meet in Japan:

The aim of this paper is to examine how jazz music and academic contemporary music
related each others in the 1960s Japanese avant-garde musicscenes. Especiallywefocused on
the activities of the two music scenes, 1) experiments of the Modern Jazz music by the
Contemporarymusiccomposers at Sougetsu Art Center,themecca oftheavant-gardeart scenes
in 1960 s Japan, and 2) references of the contemporary music method in New Century Music
Institute(Shinseiki Ongaku Kenkyujo),one of the basic point of the Japanese free jazz scene.
