Titration Lab Report

Purpose: To practice finding molarity of solutions to titrate other solutions.
Data:
(1): Finding grams of NaOH needed to prepare 0.150M of NaOH
0.150 M NaOH = 0.150 mol/ 1L NaOH
0.150 mol NaOH

0.250 L

39.998 g NaOH

1L

1 mol NaOH
Measure and used 1.49 g NaOH
Not 1.50 g NaOH because of lack of time

1.49 g NaOH

=1.50 g NaOH

1 mol NaOH

1 M NaOH

39.998 g NaOH

0.250 L

=0.149 M NaOH

Result: Created 250mL of 0.149 M NaOH from 1.49 g of NaOH

(2): Create KHP

Measure 0.50 g KHP with 50.0 mL of distilled water
0.50g KHP

1 mol KHP

1 M KHP

204.2g KHP

0.100 L

=0.0245 M KHP

With the balance equation (NaOH + KHP -> H2O + NaKP), M1V1 =M2V2 can be used to find
the volume of KHP need to titrate NaOH
Finding the aliquot needed to titrate NaOH with KHP
0.149M NaOH x V1 = 0.0245 M KHP x 0.100 L
V1 =

0.0245 M x 0.100 L

= 16.4 mL of KHP is needed for titrating NaOH

0.149 M

In our experiment, 16.4 mL of NaOH provided a light shade of pink for 100 mL KHP

(Part 3 )(Unknown Solution)

Purpose: To use molarity and titration skills to find molarity of the given unknown sample.
(sample T)
Procedure: NaOH + HCl <-> NaCl + H2O
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Obtain Sample of unknown from Teacher and record. (Sample T)

Create NaOH for titration. (.119 M NaOH)
Measure 10 ml of unknown and add 5 drops of phenolphthalein.
Titrate sample to reach endpoint. (lightest pink possible)
If too dark, use less NaOH in your next trial.

Data:
Trial 1

5 drops of KHP

9.75

very dark pink

Trial 2

0 drops of KHP

Failed

Failed

Trial 3

5 drops of KHP

9.9

Light Pink(too dark)

Trial 4

5 drops of KHP

9.6

Lighter Pink(still too

dark)

Trial 5

5 drops of KHP

Faint Pink

Results: Averaged V-end is 9.6

(9.75 V-end)(.119 M NaOH) / (10.5 initial volume of Unknown M HCl) =
.111 M of HCl.
Actual is .110 / .111 = .99
(.99) (100) = 99% efficiency with 1% error.
Conclusion: The purpose of this lab is to practice creating solutions for the purpose of finding
the unknown of the given sample. Using this formula M1V1 = M2V2 you can find and verify the
molarity of the given unknown solution or the newly created solutions. My unknown solution
lab was an interesting and intimidating lab to do, because we didnt know what the numbers
were supposed to look like, nice and even or slightly off. Trails 1,3,4,and 5 were a success
compared to trial 2 because my eagerness of making something clear turn pink took over and i
forgot to add KHP. So, trial 2 failed and was aborted. My NaOH looked unworthy of trials
because it had black segments in it, from a stained beaker, but it didn't not affect the molarity of

my NaOH. Therefore I decided to still use it, and yet I was able to make a 99% efficiency on the
unknown sample. The lab itself was very interesting and fun to do. I was very eager to make
something clear turn pink so I rushed through the labs, as we were also very time crunched, just
like as if we were down by 1 with 30 seconds on the shot clock left. But, we had multiple days to
work on it so in the end it worked out just fine. There are multiple things that went wrong during
the lab, such as; the unclean beaker that contained floating black bits, and how measuring from a
beaker isn't as precise as from a graduated cylinder, so my results were affected by those causes,
but not greatly, as I believe.
