Some say that because Romans 10:8-18 quotes Isaiah 28:16 and Joel 2:32 that both refer to YHWH, and in Romans it
says Jesus is Lord/Kurios, then Jesus as Lord is also Jesus as YHWH/God.
Romans also quotes Deuteronomy 13:14, Isaiah 51:1, 52:7 and Psalms 19:4, six passages in total.
I will show that this interpretation is incorrect and that Romans 10:8-18 does NOT show Jesus to be God.
Whether you agree or disagree, in part or in whole, big or small, please email me any feedback to help improve this
study. I would also appreciate any help with its logic, grammar, typos, editing etc.
Before analyzing Romans 10:8-18, I am going to highlight the wording of the six OT passages quoted in Romans.
This evidence has to be taken into account when interpreting our passage. I have underlined the quotations.

Part 1 Deuteronomy 30:10-14

Deut 30:10-14 when you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes
that are written in this Book of the Law
14 But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.
The word of God is near us, God put it on our hearts (Heb 8:10, Rom 2:15)
Quoted in Romans 10:8

Part 2 Psalm 19:1-4

Psalm 19:1-4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he
has set a tent for the sun,
Psalm 19:1-4 their voice refers figuratively to the voice of the heavens, the sky, the day and the night in vs1-2
In Romans 10:18 their voice refers to the words of God and Christ, that was spoken by Christ and now disciples

Part 3 Isaiah 28:16

ESV Isaiah 28:16 therefore thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in
Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: Whoever believes will not be in
haste.
The last word in ESV Isaiah 28:16 haste or hasten.

"shame" ASV, HCSB, LEB, NET, NIRV, NIV, NKJV, NRSV, RSV,
It is interesting that of these twenty translations, there is such an array of variations. I have not checked to see if each
translation matches the OT to the NT. It seems to have no bearing on the outcome.

Part 4 Isaiah 52:7

Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes
peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns
In Isaiah 52:7 The feet of him who brings good news refers to the heralds bringing news of the end of the exile for
the people of Judah in Babylon spoken about in Isaiah 40:9-11.
In Romans 8:15 As a prediction it applies to Jesus being sent by YHWH/God and bringing good news to the Jews and
the Gentiles. Mathew 11:5, Luke 3:18, 4:18, 4:43, 7:22, 8:1,

Part 5 Isaiah 53:1

Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been
revealed?
In Isaiah 53:1 us refers to God along with Isaiah who was making the quotation.
In Romans 10:16 us refers to God and Christ Jesus.

Part 6 Joel 2:32

Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in
Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors
shall be those whom the LORD calls.
Everyone who calls on the name of YHWH/God shall be saved
Quoted in Romans 8:13

Part 7 Romans 10:8-18

Romans 10:8-18 But what does it say? The word (teachings of God) is near you, in your mouth and in your
heart (Ref Deuteronomy 30:10) (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord (YHWH/God made Jesus Lord/Kurios Acts 2:36)
and believe in your heart that God raised him (Jesus) from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes in him (Ref Isaiah 28:16 YHWH/God) will not be put to
shame.

12 For

there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord (YHWH/God) is Lord of all, bestowing
his riches on all who call on him.
13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord (Ref Joel 2:32 YHWH/God) will be saved.
14 How then will they (people) call on him (YHWH/God) in whom they have not believed? And how are they to
believe in him (YHWH/God) of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone
(Jesus) preaching?
15 And how are they (Jesus) to preach unless they are sent (by YHWH/God)?
As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those (Ref Isaiah 52:7 heralds, now Jesus the herald) who preach
the good news!
16 But they (people) have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed what he has heard
from us (Isaiah 53:1 YHWH/God and Isaiah the prophet, now YHWH/God and Jesus the prophet)?
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
18 But I ask, have they (people) not heard? Indeed they (people) have, for Their voice has gone out to all the
earth, and their words to the ends of the world (Ref Psalm 19:4 the heavens, now YHWH/God and Jesus).
Vs8 Quoting Deuteronomy 30:14. The last part of this verse says "that is, the word of faith that we proclaim" which
is a clarification of what "the word" is. It is the communication we speak, not the person Jesus.
Vs9 Jesus is Lord. YHWH/LORD/God was Lord/Adonay in the OT, He then made Jesus Lord/Kurios.
Jesus is Lord does not mean Jesus is LORD/YHWH, only God is ever called YHWH. God and people are Lord
(adown or adonay) in the OT. God, Jesus and people are called Lord (kurios) in the NT. The statement Jesus is
Lord/kurios does not prove, or say that Jesus is YHWH/God! We say Jesus is Lord because he is our master and the
example that we follow in our Christian walk.
See Section 37D Who is Lord, Who is LORD linked here.
Vs11 Everyone who believes in him, YHWH/God, and quoting from Isaiah 28:16
Does the quote from the OT imply Jesus is LORD/YHWH?
We call on YHWH through Jesus his son. This does not make His son YHWH
Vs12 Who is Lord?
Because Vs 11 and 13 are both OT quotes referring to YHWH it is my opinion that Lord is God.
Some say that because Jesus is Lord/Kurios in vs9 and YHWH/God is Lord/Kurios in vs11 and vs13 then
Lord/Kurios in vs12 must be a combination of YHWH/God and Jesus and therefore one is the other. Although this
might seem like a valid argument, this does not have to be the case. As shown in passages such as Mark 1 and
Hebrews 1 where several OT passages are quoted in close proximity, English translation and specific wording can
become confusing. The fact that Acts 2:36 says YHWH/God made Jesus Lord/Kurios on its own tells us that before
Jesus was made Lord/Kurios he was not Lord/Kurios. Therefore Jesus cannot be YHWH/God who didnt need to be
made Lord/kurios by another because he was always Lord/Kurios.
Vs13 Quoting Joel 2:32 everyone who calls on the name of the LORD/YHWH GOD shall be saved
Vs14 God sends Jesus the messenger, who God made Lord, preaching the words that are not his own.
Vs15Quoting Isaiah 52:7
Vs16 quoting Isaiah 51:1
Vs17 The teachings of God spoken by Jesus Christ
Vs18 quoting Psalm 19:4
Paul continues to quote the OT to the end of chapter 10 and all through chapter 11.
Summary and Conclusion:
Romans 10:8-18 quotes Deuteronomy 30:14, Isaiah 28:16, 51:1, 52:7, Joel 2:32 and Psalm 19:4. This passage is a
combination of Pauls writings and six Old Testament scriptures, with our main focus being on vs11 and vs13 which
are quotes of Isaiah 28:16 and Joel 2:32. As in at least two other New Testament scriptures that quote several Old
Testament passages problems have arisen due to translation to the English language, combined with peoples desires
to force passages to say things that they dont actually say. As shown in this analysis, when looked at in detail there is
no proof in these writings that Jesus is God.
Because of the evidence shown here, nothing in Romans 10:8-18 prove that Jesus is God
