3A: Similarity
I can dene similarity including in terms of
dila:ons and use criteria to solve non-rou:ne
mul:-step proofs and problems involving
similar gures.
(AA, side propor:onality)

What ques:ons come to mind?

Task
Assume the Coca Cola cans are right cylinders with
the 12 oz can having a height of 4.75 inches and
diameter 2.5 inches. Find the dimensions of the 7.5 oz
can.

I. Similarity
Similarity: A transforma:on that preserves angles
and changes all distances (sides) in the same ra:o

II. Dila:ons
A. A dila%on is a transforma:on whose preimage and
image are similar.
B. The scale factor tells us how much bigger or smaller
the image is compared to the pre-image.
A dila:on is an enlargement if the scale factor is
greater than 1.
A dila:on is a reduc%on if the scale factor is
between 0 and 1.

Example

Prac:ce
Determine the scale factor and the type of
dila:on.
Think:
How do you
dieren:ate between
the pre-image and the
image coordinates?

Goal Problems
Similarity

Similarity in Area and Volume

Dila:ons
What is
the
scale
factor
In the
image?

The rectangular prism below has dimensions

3cm, 4 cm and 5cm. Calculate the volume if it is enlarged
by a scale factor of 2.

III. Similarity Statements

IV. Similarity Shortcuts

A. Angle-Angle (AA): If two triangles have two
corresponding congruent angles, the triangles must
be similar.

III. Similarity Shortcuts

B. Side-Side-Side (SSS): If three sides of one
triangle are propor:onal to the corresponding
sides of another triangle, then the triangles are
similar.

III. Similarity Shortcuts

C. Side-Angle-Side (SAS): If two sides of a
triangle are propor:onal to the corresponding
sides of another triangle and their included
angle are congruent, then the triangles are
similar.

Prac:ce
Are the following triangles similar? If so, how?
