Vestibule:
o Space between the teeth and the inner mucosal lining of the
lips and
cheeks
Dentition:
o Describes the natural teeth in the jawbones
Primary Dentition:
o First set of 20 primary teeth baby teeth or deciduous
teeth
Permanent Dentition:
o Refers
to the 32 secondary or
adult teeth
Mixed Dentition:
o Occurs when both the primary and permanent teeth are
present
o Between ages 6 to 12 years old
Maxillary Arch:
o Upper arch
o Part of the skull
o Fixed and not capable of movement
o Set in the maxilla, the maxillary bone
Mandibular Arch:
o Lower arch
o Capable of movement through the action of the
temporomandibular joint
o The mandible, mandibular bone, supports the teeth in the
lower arch
Quadrants:
o Imaginary midline divides each arch into left and right
halves
o When maxillary and mandibular arches are each divided into
halves, four sections result = quadrants
1. Maxillary right quadrant
2. Maxillary left quadrant
3. Mandibular right quadrant
4. Mandibular left quadrant
Oral Cavity:
o Anterior:
TOWARDS the FRONT of the mouth
o Posterior:
TOWARDS the BACK of the mouth
Medial:
TOWARDS the MIDDLE or TOWARDS the MIDDLE OF
THE ARCH
Lateral:
TOWARDS the SIDE or TOWARDS the OUSTIDE of the
mouth
Mesial:
TOWARDS the MID-LINE of the dental arch
Distal:
AWAY from the MID-LINE of the dental arch
Eruption:
o Movement of the tooth through the surrounding tissues, so
that more of the tooth becomes visible in the mouth
Exfoliation:
o Process by which the roots of the baby tooth are resorbed and
dissolved until so little root remains that the baby tooth falls
out
Occlusion:
o Relationship of the mandibular and maxillary teeth when
closed or during excusive movements of the mandible
o When tooth comes into contact with the teeth of the maxillary
arch in any functional relationship
Types of
Teeth:
o Teeth vary
depending on
the individuals teeth shape, size, and location in the jaws
o Three basic food processing functions:
1. Cutting
2. Holding
3. Grasping and Grinding
Incisors:
o Single-rooted teeth
o Relatively sharp thin edge referred to as incisal edge
o Located in the FRONT of the mouth
o CENTRAL (front teeth) and LATERAL (distal to the centrals)
o Designed to CUT FOOD WITHOUT the application of heavy
forces

4. Premolars
Nonsuccedaneous Teeth:
o Three permanent molars DO NOT succeed primary
teeth in each quadrant
o Class II:
Proximal Surfaces of Posteriors Only
o Class V:
Gingival or Cervical (gum line) Buccal, Facial,
or Lingual
o Class VI:
Cusp tip
