1.Have you faced discrimination, if yes, what kind?

Yes, have faced racial discrimination. I was clearly refused service/had my service delayed while dining
out. Once while in college in VA and once in while in graduate school in South Africa. There have been
countless other times but those were the two most prominent and undeniable cases.
2. If not, what kind of discrimination have you witnessed?
I have heard that my race is lazy (which is funny since our labor built this country) and that we are thugs.
I have also heard that we only want handouts instead of taKing care of ourselves.
.3.How has discrimination changed or evolved over your lifetime?
I not sure that it has changed much in my lifetime. I see more diversity in the school and neighborhoods
bit that is about all.
7. Have you faced discrimination, if yes, what kind?

Some people make fun of my accent. Yes, at job places, you have to do better than your nonminority colleagues to receive a sufficient reward. To put it in another way, your white colleagues do not
have to be excellent to be recognized, but as a minority, you have to be excellent to receive recognition.
8. If not, what kind of discrimination have you witnessed?
Theres a professor at my school who is black. When he was entering the elevator, a white
cleaner stopped him and said, Students are not allowed to take the elevator. The professor said, Im not
a student, Im a professor here. The same colleague told me that his white colleagues would elect much
younger and inexperienced white members of the department to important positions.
9. How would you classify this discrimination?
I would classify it as lack of equity and equal opportunity.
10. What kind of stereotypes did you hear about your race?
HardworKing, good at math, all good cooks, loud, tiger parents. Chinese people are good at
math, bad at grammar and pronunciation, parents are tiger moms and dads, and that chinese people use
their dishwashers as a storage. Theyre all nearsighted and wear glasses and have chinky eyes and good
skin. They like to play ping-pong and theyre nerds.
11. How has discrimination changed or evolved over your lifetime?
When I was a student a lady at the Registrars Office said something I didnt understand. I
asked, can you repeat what you said? She repeated at an excruciatingly slow pace, as if I were an idiot.
Later on, when I go shopping, at the registers, some of the cashiers look at me with wrinkled eyebrows as
if they are bracing themselves to hear my broken english. But now at least at my workplace, the majority
of people dont discriminate against me because I have a doctorate degree, teach well, and established in
the workplace. So a lot of times discrimination happens due to lack of knowledge.
12. If you were to create a theatrical performance on your subject, what would you want it to
include? I would want to include how hard minorities have to work to be recognized to the same
degree as their white colleagues. Even if they work harder and do more, they may not receive the
same amount of reward. I would want to portray the lack of confidence and sometimes dignity
because of whats mentioned above.
