PLANNING Time, WORK Time, RECALL Time

This three-part sequence is unique to the HighScope Curriculum.
Occurring daily, it includes a 10- to 15-minute period during which
children plan what they want to do during work time (the area to visit,
materials to use, and friends to play with); a -minute work time for
children to carry out their plans (or shift to new activities that interest
them); and another 10- to 15-minute period for reviewing and
recalling with an adult and other children what they've done and
learned.
1.

Trash Math:

Weve been finding lots of trash on our playground again lately so

we decided it was time to help clean up our earth again! This
time, we used math. Each child had to find 5 pieces of trash and
put it in the garbage can. As children found trash, the subtracted
until they had 0 pieces left to find. We heard lots of math going
on from the kids as they worked hard to keep our space clean! I
found 5 pieces, now I need 4 more i found 3 pieces so far, now I
just need to find 2 more I found 5 pieces of trash so Im all
done!. Some of the kids loved helping so much that they went
on to find even more trash than was asked of themI found 11
pieces, thats 6 more than I was supposed to find!
2.

Garden Journals:

Its been about little over a month since we first planted our seeds.
Weve been using our garden journals to document the progress
thats been observed over the past few weeks. Children are given
their journals and materials to decorate their journals. Children are
given their plant and asked to observe what they see happening. After
theyve done their observations, they record their findings in their
journal.
Day 28: What I see Happening- Our plants are growing like crazy!
Children were given their plants and they recorded what they saw.
3.

Worm Exploration:

Weve been doing lots of learning about bugs and insects and other
creepy crawlies. Today we used our hands to search for worms in tubs
filled with soil! Once we found the words we explored them using our
5 senses, rulers and magnifying glasses.

and then opened it back up. Voila! The children were so impressed
with the results noting things like this side looks like the other side
now and wow! Now both sides match!
