English Language Development (ELD 1A-B) Syllabus (2015-2016)

Course Overview: English Language Development (ELD) 1A-B uses the programs Read 180 and
System 44; these programs are intensive reading intervention programs. The goal of Read 180 and
System 44, for ELD classes, is college and career readiness for ALL students. For more information on

Classroom Rules/Regulations/Routines
#1: Be responsible and come prepared with materials

Materials: Students need 1 binder; binder dividers; 1 pack of College Ruled binder paper;
ruler; pencils; erasers; pens

#2: Give your best effort AND be proud of your work (no drawings, multiple staples, highlighting on
classwork/homework)
#3: Respect the Speaker: If teacher or student is engaged in classroom discussion, be actively
listening, participating, and stay in your seat. If you have a question, raise your hand, wait for
acknowledgement, put hand down, and wait to be called on
#4: Tardy Policy: Students must be in their seat, with materials, BEFORE the bell rings, or else door
locked/Tardy Sweep/OCS
#5: Personal Space/Boundaries: Keep your hands to yourself; do not take/use anything from anyone
without their permission
#6: Students get 4 bathroom passes per semester (exceptions for emergencies; passes do not rollover to Semester 2)
#7: #respecttheroom

Language, behavior, cleanliness


Leave your room/area clean (floor/desk/surrounding area); straighten desks, push-in

desk/computer chairs
No make-up or cologne/perfume
No food or drinks in class (water is allowed); eat snack and/or drink outside or on ramp
Do not fold or bend corners of pages, or write in Student Library Books
Student folder/binder must remain neat, without any pencil/pen markings or drawings, or tears

#8: Student Work Policy

Always Read with a Pencil: Students are expected to keep a pencil in-hand when reading to
underline important details, and take notes (Cornell Notes) on what they discover within the

texts
Save all classwork/homework in student folder/binder until the last day of semester (it is proof

of grades)
If student has an Excused Absence, student is responsible for asking for, receiving, and
completing their missing work (being absent does not excuse you from completing your
classwork/homework). For Unexcused Absences, student work will only be worth up to 50%

#10: Tablet Policy

Students are to use tablets only with teacher permission; tablets are to be packed away until

asked to use them


Students must have their tablets, keyboards, and chargers with them daily (tablets fully-

charged)
Tablets are for educational purposes only (students are only to use tablets for educational
websites and writing)
o Students are not allowed to take photos/videos of students/teacher in class
o Social Media Websites (Facebook; Twitter; Instagram) are NOT allowed during class-time.
If there is a continual problem, I will collect the tablet and your parent/guardian will pick

it up from the main office, after school


Tracking Software: Students are to remember that the school district will use tracking software
to locate stolen tablets

#12: Cell Phone Policy

Student cell phones are to be packed away, on Silent (no ringer), while class is in progress (no

texting or taking photos/videos)


Playing music through phones, iPods, MP3 players (with the use of headphones) is allowed ONLY
during Independent Reading Rotation. Warning: If I can hear your music, your music is too loud.
If there is a continual problem, I will collect the phone and your parent/guardian will pick it up
from the main office, after school

#13: Read 180 and System 44 Policies

Computer Login: There is a generic login for computers during the Software Rotation
(instructions are on the wall, near computer screens use the generic login at each software

rotation, and do not log off computer for next rotation.


Software Login: Software login is Perm# and students individual password
Rotation Policy: Rotations are after every 20 minutes of class time; students are to pick up their
belongings and rotate with the class to the next rotations. Rotations need to be done quietly;

efficiently; with students cleaning their area and pushing in their chairs for next group of
students
#11: Students will be graded on how well they know, use, and troubleshoot (fix) software and
classroom technology problems, independently (Software Rotation/Book Quizzes/SRI/SPI/tablet/CD
players/headphones)
#14: Remember, everyone you will ever meet can teach you something youve never known
#15: Remember: Thinking is invisible! So, speak up, write it down, and share your amazingly
brilliant thoughts!

Grade Printouts: The class grades will be printed out monthly and posted in room 908. Students are
responsible for seeking out and speaking with the teacher for any confusion/missing assignments with
grade.
Late Work Policy: Students are expected to complete and turn in all assignments by the due date.
Students may turn in late work if they have an excused absence (if absent, student must ask for
missed assignment and complete it). If student has an unexcused absence or simply failed to turn in
work by due date, late work will only be worth up to 50%.
Classwork/Rotations
Whole/Small Group: Students need r-Book, System 44 book, notebook, writing utensil, and must be
ready to participate
Software:
Students need an average of 20 minutes of software use per software
rotation, or else student grade will be affected (exceptions will be made for faulty
internet connectivity/computer errors)
Independent Reading:
Students are responsible for reading 3-5 books for Read 180, and 8-10
books for System 44 each semester. Students need to choose books from the
student library that have lexiles 100 points above or 100 points below their current
lexile
Discipline: I keep detailed records of students disciplinary actions; if a student receives a referral, it
will be deserved

4th offense: Parent classroom visit

Cheating, Copying and Plagiarism: Cheating, copying, and plagiarism will not be tolerated and will
result in an F on the assignment, test/quiz, and possibly in the course. Multiple offenses will be
reported via written referral.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend class, on-time (in their seat, before the bell rings, with
their materials), every day. Students are responsible for asking for, receiving, and completing their
missing work. If a student is absent on a test or quiz day, he or she will need to make arrangements to
make-up the test/quiz.
Films: Occasionally, film/videos above the G rating are used in the classroom in order to illustrate a
particular curricular-related concept. By signing you give permission for your student to watch movies,
related to academia, above the G rating.
Mandated Reporter: As an educator, part of the California Department of Education, I am legally
required to ensure a report is made when abuse is observed or suspected
