FR. JOHNS WEBNOTES: CORPUS CHRISTI
Besides physical hunger, man experiences another hunger, a hunger that cannot be satiated with ordinary food. Its a
hunger for life, a hunger for love, a hunger for eternity. And the sign of manna like the entire experience of Exodus
also contains in itself this dimension: it was the symbol of a food that satisfies this deep human hunger. Jesus gives
us this food, rather, He himself is the living bread that gives life to the world (cf. Jn 6:51). His Body is the true food in
the form of bread; his Blood is the true drink in the form of wine. It isnt simple nourishment to satisfy the body, like
manna; the Body of Christ is the bread of the last times, capable of giving life, eternal life, because this bread is made
of love.
Homily, June 19, 2014, Rome
Pope Francis
Todays feast of the Body and Blood of Christ is an invitation with a necessary response. In gathering together on
Sundays, we are nourished by the Word and the Eucharist. Our spiritual and our communal hungers can be satisfied in
this celebration. Coming together from one Sunday to the next is not a withdrawing from the world. It feeds us, it
satisfies our longings. Pope Francis speaks on many occasions of our responsibility of going out into the
world. Some food for thought; If you are not in how can you go out This dismissal at Mass is a commissioning, our
sending out with Gods blessing.
