The Song
Title of song: RIVA (Restart the Game)
Artist: Klingande
Genre: Melodic Deep House
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNaZ6hPvwNE
The conventions of music videos from this genre: Melodic deep house is still a very up and
coming genre that is slowly becoming increasingly more popular in the charts alongside the
house and pop artists. House music features up-tempo beats which usually provoke
dancing. The music videos that are produced for this genre of music tend to feature dancing
in club environments or similar, often conveying messages about love, sexuality, and drugs.
The dancing puts emphasis on the people and how much they are enjoying themselves, it is
also used to enhance the build up to the drop in the song as for house music this is
something which the song itself is centred around and often this is when in a club the crowd
would show cast their best dance moves.
The videos usually have a group of people who often tend to be teenagers and those in their
early twenties because this is who the music is targeted to most commonly, these people
are sexualised to appeal to audiences both male and female.
How are you going to meet these conventions in your video? In order to meet these
conventions in my own music video the actors that I will be using will be 18 years old a girl
and boy, this is an age group who commonly listen to this genre of music. The audience will
be able to relate easily, however unlike most other house music videos I will be using a
narrative; my video is portraying a story. The story doesnt have any unknown meaning
behind but comes from the title of the song `restart the game.
In most house music videos the actors featured are wearing almost no clothing `scantily
clad this doesnt follow the story of my music video and so incorporating other conventions
to do with colour, I will dress the actors in bright colour (pink and blue) as this is something
that is commonly with rave and clubs but also stereotypically girl and boy colours.
Costume
House music tends to feature the use of teenagers because this is the audience which the
music is most appealing to, who most of the artists target their music at. This is the age
range I am using for my actors/actresses the dress I feel that would be most appropriate

Would be causal wear as this is what they would feel most comfortable in. Because it is a
game I feel that the use of colours is important to enhance the male and female characters
and so the colours blue and pink will be ideally used, as these are the colours that are
stereotypically considered with genders.
Lighting
In a typical music video of this genre is filming in a club environment, in a club environment
you are likely to find a dark environment that is lit by bright colourful flashing strobe
lighting. This lighting creates the atmosphere we all expect to see when entering a club and
because this is the music that is commonly played in a club then we can expect this in the
music video too. However my music video in particular is focused on the narrative and the
story and not a conventional video for this genre of music, I will be using natural lighting in
my music video; night and day etc.

I will be using a number of different locations as each location is intended to be a new level
of the video game, I will use the locations to their full potential to get a different range of
shots and environment changes; the locations are as listed above.
Research
The main production that I am in competition with is the official music video that has been
produced for the song Klingande RIVA the song which I am using for my production.

The video itself is very different to what I attempt to create, the official video explores
nature, instinct and voodoo against a saturated
picture in an all-sensory presentation, which
encompasses sight, sound smell, and touch.
Although slightly creepy as if taken out of a
scene from some cult horror movie the video
isnt exactly what most would expect from such
a melodic song. The track however substitutes
its distinctive saxophone riffs with a more
subdued use of piano juxtaposed by harmonica
and whimsical vocal styling by Broken Back to
recreate that beloved taste of summer and its
promise of new beginnings.
The colours that are used are bleak
and make the surroundings look
distressed and old suggesting poverty
or past-times which is not
representative of other music videos of
the same genre considering that
others feature fast paced movement
and bright colours. There is a clear
story that is being portrayed
throughout the music video relatable
to voodoo or in this particular case it
seems hoodoo also known as folk magic, this style is reflected through their outfits and can
also be a mirror of the distinctive sounds such as piano and harmonica which signifies folk
music.
The lyrics of the song are relatable to the
music video, the lyrics talk about a girl
Who broke her chains She is not to
blame, you shook the tree the video
follows and focuses on one girl in
particular and so its almost like her story.
In my personal production I shall be
attempting to link the lyrics to my video, I
will do this using the lyrics Restart the
game and Just walk to make it end as
the whole concept of my video is for the

two to finish the game but it keeps `restarting they need to make their way through the
game by completing the levels, running through the game to `make it end following a nonlinear structure.
The video uses multiple close-up shots to show the audience the emotion that is being felt
from the facial expressions of the people in the video. This intensity sets a fairly intense
tone for the video something which wouldnt be used commonly following this genre
however with my personal production I want to incorporate similar aspects because I want
to build a sense of suspense when the people are going up through the levels and `restarting
the game and so I intend to use close ups for the same reason.
When the beat drops in the song a new side to the production is revealed the group of
people who seem to be a small village they are seen to be dancing around celebrating
something which has happened this can be perceived for the audience as if they are
enjoying the music because this is something that happens in a club environment when the
beat drop people `go mad as a way of appreciating the song. This is a technique called
cutting to the beat it helps to create rhythm and pace in the song.
I feel that this specific feature is very important in a music video of this genre, as mentioned
it sets the same tone as it would in a club environment and therefore this is something that I
will defiantly be using in my own production. I will do this by ensuring that when editing I
use the cutting to the beat technique when the beat drops in the song and the distinctive
saxophone riffs are introduced.
Unfortunately for me with their production being of a higher budget and produced
specifically for Klingande they were able to feature him in the video which adds star appeal
to the video which automatically makes the video appealing to an audience particularly the
target audience. This is something that I will not be able to incorporate into my own
production due to budget etc.
Another video that I feel that I am in competition with based on the genre of the song and
the way in which the music video is produced and collated together is Blonde Higher
Ground https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjiZNUsJYjw. Blonde are deep house
production duo from Bristol, compared to the other videos that have been produced for
their music this has been less popular however I feel it is most relatable to my own
intentions for my production.
The video starts off with a variety of different shots all at once allowing us to see the
location and what is happening from a few different perspectives this allows us to feel more
immersed in the video because it is almost as if we are there

This is something which I hope to use in

my own production when they are running
through the game and getting through the
levels with fast paced short clips from
different angles and perspectives as I feel
this will add a feeling of excitement much
like when you are playing a game and you
complete a level or when in a club and the
beat drops.
Compared to the Klingande RIVA music video the colours are bright and give the
impression of happiness and youthfulness which is typical of videos of this genre because
the brightness is a reflection of the target audience being young, adolescent enjoying
themselves and having a good time. Not only appealing to this type of audience but a much
larger mass audience as well because everyone can appreciate happiness and good
times/things.
The video uses a number of panning
match-cuts in a sequence of the video to
show the actions that are being made by
the people in the music video whether
that be running, skating or surfing. This
gives a new viewpoint and allows the
audience to see it from a different angle,
this is something that I defiantly aim to
put into my music video as I feel it will add
a level of excitement having short shots
one after another but ensuring that they
are all match cuts so that the feel is professional and add a sense of action and adventure.
This video also uses cutting to the beat I feel that for this particular type of genre it is
essential to cut to the beat especially when the beat drops because the audience is
expecting something exciting to happen
at this point as you would in club
environment.
Much like the other video I feel I am
competing with they use close up shots to
introduce the characters and make it feel
more personal to the audience who are
watching, the difference however is that
they do this towards the end of the video

rather than at the start but because there doesnt seem to be a narrative which is being
portrayed throughout the video it isnt essential.
I feel that it is essential for any music track to have a music video that follows; the visual
aspects allow the audience to view the music in a different way and develop a new
understanding of the song. Chris Parr who is the former VP of music programming and
talent relations for CMT in Nashville states in his video that music videos educate and
introduce artists and their music to an audience of consumers. With the help of visual
aspects many people would be unfamiliar to the artists and music they listen; he says that
this especially applies to the younger and more modern demographic: `a lot of people who
may not have grown up listening to country music or find themselves searching it out, music
videos are an entry point
http://www.artistshousemusic.org/videos/chris+parr+on+the+importance+of+music+vide
because of this I feel that in this particular
market there is always space for new
productions for artists to promote their
work however it is important that each of
these productions is different and stands
out from those which already exist, if not
then there is always the risk of it being
unsuccessful and boring for audiences.
After undertaking research using YouTube
to find other music videos similar to mine I
found that my idea is original especially for
the specific genre of music I am promoting.
I did find a music video created for Californiacation Red Hot Chili Peppers the video takes
the form of a PC 3D game from the third person point of view of each of the band members.
Each band member completing a different level of the game/different location dodging
different things, this particular video was the bands most watched video on YouTube
reaching 130 million views in 2006.

Lyrics
You've tasted the pain of losing someone
Who broke her chains
Don't even look back
At these wasted moments 'cause
Future ain't what it used to be
She is not to blame
You shook the tree
Feel what should fall
As you could see
Restart the game

You've tasted the pain of losing someone

Who broke her chains
Don't even look back
At these wasted moments 'cause
Future ain't what it used to be
She is not to blame
You shook the tree
Feel what should fall
As you could see
Restart the game

You can't stay for years

Crying all your tears
Move your freaking ass
Forget about the past

You are not out of mind

Down this road you'll find
Answers to your pain
Just walk to make it end

You've tasted the pain of losing someone

Who broke her chains
Don't even look back
At these wasted moments 'cause
Future ain't what it used to be
She is not to blame
You shook the tree
Feel what should fall
As you could see
Restart the game

You've tasted the pain of losing someone

Who broke her chains
Don't even look back
At these wasted moments 'cause
Future ain't what it used to be

Meaning of the song

From watching the video there is no clear meaning behind the song and the lyrics make no
suggestion to one either. However doing so research I was able to find that RIVA is Swedish
and means seize then looking back at the lyrics I can see that the song is about seizing the
day and not thinking about the past; You can't stay for years, crying all your tears, move
your freaking ass, forget about the past. Restart the game is almost referring life to a game
and that when things may not go your way Answers to your pain, just walk to make it end
we should just carry on and restart the game.
How will your visuals relate to the song?
The relation will be to the title of the song Restart the game rather than Riva the
concept of my music is a video game. The video will follow two people as they make their
way through a game, I will use both genders so one of the characters will be male and the
other female they will be wearing generic stereotypical colours, the boy will be dressed in
blue and the girl pink. The intention of the two is to finish the game but as the title suggests
the game keeps restarting; this ultimately means they are unable to finish the game. The
reason why the game keeps restarting is unknown to the audience and wont be revealed.
I will use a number of different locations which will range from a busy London high street to
an abandoned school and various other locations, each different location will act as a new
level. In order to make the video run smoothly and make it look like each different location
comes together as one, I will use fast paced panning match cuts which I hope will help me to
achieve the finishing look I planned for but also match the action that would be expected of
a game.
The production will use multiple cameras for ease from filming shot to gain different angles
of one specific shot; I will also be using a GoPro to gain point of view shots of the actors this
will add to the variety of shots.
In certain parts of the video I will be using coloured smoke flares, smoke flares are most
commonly used to signify when someone is in distress and raise alarm. I will be using them
in my production to add colour and make scenes look aesthetically pleasing to audiences
but more so I will be using them when the song is nearing the end and the characters do not
have long left to finish the game, I will use this to show distress and cause alarm. The video
will end with a young boy sat in front of the TV playing on his Xbox with the music video
(game) with game over graphics flashing.
In order to make my production look like a game I will be taking typical conventions such as
health bar, lives bar and compass (maps) in the corner of the screen, I will create the
graphics on Photoshop and add them to the production when editing on Premier Pro.

Diary
This week consisted of completing Lo1 tasks, developing the idea and
researching it. Doing these tasks allowed me to find out more about my
competitors, how I can make mine different to existing productions in order
for my production to be successful. As well as developing and researching I
made plans for my production; when, where and who I will be filming
information that would be vital when creating my pitch. Writing up proposal
and pitch, I got behind this as I was still completing other work in Lo1.

27th April 1st May

Continued writing proposal and pitch, other than this the week was pitching
and so the class watched each others pitches and gave them feedback. My
pitch was on Thursday as mentioned I had gotten behind on my pitch and so I
feel that overall my pitch could have been better if Id have spent more time
on it however I was fairly happy with the outcome of my presentation, I felt I
put all the relevant information in.
Completing pre-production booklet, spent most of the week completing the
shooting script and making some changes to the proposal; making it better.
Continuing with pre-production, having got behind with the other work I
continued work as its essential for when filming begins.
Pre-production, this week started off slowly as I feel that storyboarding is
something which I am best at so it took me a few attempts to get started
HALF TERM, I had planned to film this week but things didnt go to plan as my
cast members were not available at this time which ultimately left me behind
as I had not filmed before this point.
I filmed at the beginning of this week, filming went to plan and this allowed
me to edit in the few days before the final deadline, I feel that I should have
left myself more time for both of these things and my ultimate outcome may
have been better.
