Field Study: Site Introduction

Objective - to get a better understanding of an individual environment through my own

perspective, track what animals species and plants develop, and observe how a simple area
changes throughout time.
Site Description 1). Observation Description
4/29/15 afternoon:
Sun patterns - because my designated area is already covered by a large tree, the land
remained shaded as the sun was leading into late afternoon
Animals - squirrels, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, gnats, mosquitoes
Smells/Sounds - birds chirping, dogs barking, some scents of manure and an oaky smell
from the trees
5/1/15 evening:
Sun patterns - the area was definitely darker, and as the sun was setting, the holes in the
trees allowed the light to shine really bright compared to the rest of the location
Animals - didnt see any new animals other than a lot more flying insects
Smells/Sounds - the air smelled really fresh and their was a rustling sound in the trees
probably from birds
2). Prediction
- Within the next 8 weeks, I believe the quality of the soil, amount of living plants, and number
of recurring animals will show changes.
- For the soil, because we are in a drought and rain is rare during the summer months in Novato,
its quality will become very poor and dry.
- My area doesnt have many plants to begin with, but with the lack of water and constant shade
from the large trees, I predict that these few plants will easily begin dying.
- My predictions are heavily based off of the continuing drought, which leads to animals having
to leave their habitats (like my selected area) in exchange for one with an abundance of food and
water
- To see if my predictions will end up being correct, I have to perform multiple tests on the soil,
keep count of the number of plants that remain alive, and track the amount of the indigenous
animals in my area throughout the course of 8 weeks.
