Drive firmware updates

Drive firmware packages allow you to update drive firmware on clusters and nodes that
are incompatible with drive support packages.
You can install a drive firmware package and extract the files in the firmware package
archive on each node in a cluster, but you cannot automatically update the drive firmware
on the entire cluster. You need to update each node individually.
Only one firmware package can be installed at a time.
Note

It is recommended that you upgrade your firmware only after receiving direction from
Isilon Technical Support.

System requirements
You can update the drive firmware on a node either through a drive support package or a
drive firmware package based on the specific system requirements for your nodes.

If the cluster is running OneFS 6.5.x, 7.0.x, or 7.1.0.x, update the drive firmware
through the drive firmware package.

If the cluster is running OneFS 7.1.1 or later, update the drive firmware of nodes with
bootflash drives by downloading and installing the latest drive support package from
EMC Online Support. You do not need to reboot the updated nodes to complete the
firmware update for these nodes using the drive support package. For more
information, see the Isilon Drive Support Package Release Notes.

If the cluster is running OneFS 7.1.1 or later and has nodes without bootflash drives,
update the drive firmware on these nodes as follows:
1. Install the latest drive support package using the instructions in the Isilon Drive
Support Package Release Notes. Skip the instructions on updating the drive
firmware for the nodes without bootflash drives.
2. Install the latest drive firmware package using the instructions in this document.
3. Update and verify the drive firmware for the nodes without bootflash drives using
the instructions in this document.

Release Notes

If the cluster is running a version of OneFS earlier than 6.5, upgrade the cluster to a
supported OneFS version and then update your drive firmware.

Resolved issues
The following issue is resolved in this version of the drive firmware package:
l

Removed the D254 firmware for the 800 GB HGST Ultrastar SSD800MM
HUSMM8080ASS205 drive because special firmware update procedures are required
to safely update the drive with this firmware.

Install the FRU package (CTO only)

A Field Replacement Unit (FRU) package must be installed on configure-to-order (CTO)
nodes before you can execute a drive firmware update.
You must first determine whether the node you are updating is CTO capable.
l

If the node is CTO capable, install the FRU package on the node prior to installing the
other drive firmware updates.

If the node is not CTO capable, there is no need to install the FRU package. Skip this
step and install the other firmware updates.

Determine whether the nodes are CTO capable

You can determine whether the nodes you will be working on are configure-to-order (CTO)
nodes.
Procedure
1. Connect to each node and type the following command:
isi_inventory_tool --help | grep CTO

If a node is CTO capable, a message similar to the following appears:

NOTE: Tool intended for use on CTO capable nodes and this node is
CTO capable.

Resolved issues

If the node is not CTO capable, a message similar to the following appears:
NOTE: Tool intended for use on CTO capable nodes and this node is
not CTO capable.

Download a Field Replacement Unit (FRU) package

Before you replace a component in a configure-to-order (CTO) node, obtain a Field
Replacement Unit (FRU) package from the Isilon FTP site. The FRU package updates the
CTO and as-built information on the node, then forwards the updated information to
Isilon Technical Support.
Procedure
1. Download the latest FRU package from ftp://ftp.isilon.com/outgoing/Fru_Package/.
2. Note the name of the FRU package. You will use the name for other commands.
Package names follow this convention:
IsiFru_Package_ <date-time-stamp> .tgz
For example: IsiFru_Package_201507072125.tgz
3. Place the FRU package on the cluster through a network drop, or by asking someone
at the cluster site to place the package for you. If neither of these options is available
to you, contact Isilon Technical Support for assistance.

Install the FRU package on the node

Unpack and install the FRU package on the node.
Procedure
1. Place the FRU package on the node.
2. Unpack the FRU package by running the following command:
tar -zxvf IsiFru_Package_<date-time-stamp>.tgz

3. Type cd to change to the directory containing the FRU tar, and then install the package
by running the following command:
isi pkg install --forced_local IsiFru_Package_<date-time-stamp>.tar

As the package installs, the following message appears:

Preparing to install the package...
Checking the package for installation...
Installing the package
Committing the installation...
Package is committed.

Run the update script

After the FRU package is installed on the node, run the update script.
Procedure
1. Move to the FRU package location by running the following command:
cd /var/crash/cto/fruPackages/IsiFru_Package_<date-time-stamp>

2. Perform the update script by running one of the following commands:

If the cluster is not running in SmartLock compliance mode:

./isi_cto_update --update

If the cluster is running in SmartLock compliance mode:

sudo /usr/bin/isi_hwtools/isi_cto_update --update --filepath .
Note

You must include the period at the end of the command.

The system displays confirmation of the following items:

Drive support patches

Install the drive support patches to add OneFS support for certain drives and drive
firmware. You might receive onsite verification test (OVT) warnings for certain drive and
firmware types with these patches. Ignore the warnings as all the OneFS features will still
work as expected.
Install the following patches to add support for automatically detecting unsupported SSD
devices and for updating the firmware of unsupported drives:

Note

Versions of OneFS earlier than 7.0.1 do not support the update of firmware for newly
released drives. You must upgrade the clusters to OneFS versions 7.0.1 or later before
updating the drive firmware of newly released drives.
You can optionally install the following Onsite Verification Test (OVT) patches to disable
OVT warnings on mixing SAS and SATA drives and about short-formatted drives:

Drive support patches

Install the drive firmware package

You can install the latest drive firmware package to update your drive firmware.
Before you begin
Before updating the drive firmware, make sure that the drive firmware update tool
support patch is installed as required by your version of OneFS.
Procedure
1. Go to the EMC Online Support page that lists all the available versions of the drive
firmware package and download the latest version.
2. Open a secure shell (SSH) connection to the first node in the cluster that you are going
to update. Log in to that node using the root account.
3. Copy the downloaded package file to the cluster.
4. Unpack the file by running the tar command as follows:
tar -zxvf Drive_Firmware_<version>.tgz

5. Install the package by running the following command:

isi pkg install Drive_Firmware_<version>.tar

6. Verify that the package has installed by running the following command:
isi pkg info

Verify that Drive_Firmware_<version> appears in the list of installed packages.

Update the drive firmware

Determine the type of drive in the node, and then execute the update. The node restarts
automatically after the loading process is complete.
Before you begin
Install the drive firmware package.
Note

Do not restart or power off the node before the update is complete. When the update
process completes successfully, the node restarts automatically.
Procedure
1. Log in to the node through either a serial console port or an internal SSH connection
between nodes.
Note

External network interfaces are disabled as part of the reboot process. The command
in the next step will fail if you run the command from an external network interface.
2. Determine whether a drive firmware update is required by typing the following
command:
isi_disk_firmware_reboot

3. Determine whether any of the drives on the node that need to be updated are Western
Digital drives by typing the following command:
isi_radish -q
CAUTION

If you are performing a drive firmware update on Western Digital drives, you must
update the drives sequentially to avoid significant drive damage.
4. Type one of the following commands depending on whether the node contains any
Western Digital drives that require a drive firmware update:
l

To update the drive firmware of a node with any Western Digital drives, type the
following command to perform a sequential update:
isi_disk_firmware_reboot -sv

To update the drive firmware of a node without any Western Digital drives, type the
following command to perform a parallel update:
isi_disk_firmware_reboot -p

A drive firmware update takes 2060 seconds, depending on the drive model. A node
containing Western Digital drives takes approximately fifteen minutes to complete the
entire process.
After the update process is complete, the node reboots automatically.
If the update is unsuccessful, the LED display on the front panel of the node will
indicate an error and the node will not reboot. Wait for a few minutes and then run the
reboot command to reboot the node manually. If this process is unsuccessful,
contact EMC Isilon Technical Support.

Verify a drive firmware update

After you update the drive firmware in a node, it is important to confirm that the firmware
updated properly and that the affected drives are operating correctly.
Procedure
1. Verify that all drives have been updated by running the following command:
isi_disk_firmware_reboot

If all the drives are updated, you will receive a confirmation that none of the disks
require firmware updates.
2. Verify that all affected drives are operating in a healthy state by running the following
command:
isi devices

If a drive is operating in a healthy state, [HEALTHY] appears in the status column.

Verify a drive firmware update

Update the as-built record (CTO only)

After performing maintenance on a Configure to Order (CTO) node, you must update the
as-built record (ABR) for the node. The ABR details the current configuration of the node
for Isilon Technical Support.
Procedure
1. Change to the directory containing the as-built record by typing the following
command:
cd /var/crash/cto/fruPackages/IsiFru_Package_<date-time-stamp>

2. Update the as-built record for the node by typing the following command:
./isi_cto_update --abr

Remove the FRU package from the node

After all scripts are run, remove the FRU package from the node.
Procedure
1. Change out of the FRU package directory by running the following command:
cd /

2. Delete the FRU package from the node by running the following command:
isi pkg delete --forced_local IsiFru_Package_<date-time-stamp>

Update additional nodes

Repeat the process for updating and verifying firmware for each remaining node.
Procedure
1. Through a serial port connection, update and verify the new firmware on each node in
the cluster.

Remove the drive firmware package

After the drive firmware is updated on all nodes in the cluster, remove the drive firmware
package.
Procedure
1. Remove the drive firmware package from the cluster by typing the following
command:
isi pkg delete Drive_Firmware_<version>
