Laboratory-centered, this course is a standards-based study of living things: origins,

structures, functions, heredity, growth and development, interactions among, and
behavior of living things. Content is built around major biological concepts such as
biochemistry and the biology of cells, genetics, evolution, ecology, and the diversity of
living things. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of mathematical, analytical, data
acquisition, and communication skills. Concepts and skills are reinforced by a strong
emphasis on hands-on laboratory experiences and the integration of other branches of
science. Applications to society, individuals, and the utilization of technology are
included, as is consideration of the impact of human activity on biological systems.

Quarter 1: Cellular Structure and Function

Ba: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how scientific inquiry and
technological design, including mathematical analysis, can be used appropriately to
pose questions, seek answers, and develop solutions.
Indicators Ba.1-Ba.9
Bb: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of cells
and their organelles.
Indicators Bb.1-Bb.5, Bb.7, Bb.8
Bc: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the flow of energy within and
between living systems.
Indicators Bc.1-Bc.6

Quarter 2: Cellular Energy, Growth, and Division

Bb: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of cells
and their organelles.
Indicators Bb.4, Bb.6, Bb.7
