Viruses

1.Viruses (2007-2014.

Conficker Virus (2009)In 2009, a new computer worm crawled its way into millions of
Windows-based PCs around the world, creating a massive botnet army of remotely
controlled computers capable of stealing financial data and other information.

Stuxnet (2010) The arrival of Stuxnet was like a cartoon villain come to life: it was the
first computer virus designed specifically to cause damage in the real, as opposed to
virtual, world.
Duqu(2011) a worm thought to be related to the Stuxnet worm. The Laboratory of
Cryptography and System Security (CrySyS Lab)of the Budapest University of
Technology and Economics in Hungary discovered the threat, analysed the malware,
and wrote a 60-page report naming the threat Duqu. Duqu gets its name from the prefix
"~DQ" it gives to the names of files it creates.
Shamoon(2012) is a computer virus designed to target computers running Microsoft
Windows in the energy sector. Symantec, Kaspersky Lab, and Seculert
Gameover ZeuS Trojan(2013) this type of virus steals one's login details on popular
Web sites that involve monetary transactions. It works by detecting a login page, then
proceeds to inject a malicious code into the page, keystroke logging the computer user's
details.
The Regin Trojan horse(2014). Regin is a dropper that is primarily spread via spoofed
Web pages. Once downloaded, Regin quietly downloads extensions of itself, making it
difficult to be detected via anti-virus signatures. It is suspected to have been created by
the United States and United Kingdom over a period of months or years, as a tool for
espionage and mass surveillance.

2.Whats a computer virus?

A computer virus or worm is a self-replicating program that can spread by email or by
inserting copies of itself into other programs or documents. Most viruses or worms are
malicious programs designed to infect and gain control over a computer without the owner's
knowledge.

3.types of viruses
Macro Viruses

These viruses infect the files created using some applications or programs that contain macros
such as doc, pps, xls and mdb. They automatically infect the files with macros and also
templates and documents that are contained in the file. They hide in documents shared through
e-mail and networks.
Memory Resident Viruses
They usually fix themselves inside the computer memory. They get activated every time the OS
runs and end up infecting other opened files. They hide in RAM.
Overwrite Viruses
These types of viruses delete any information in a file they infect, leaving them partially or
completely useless once they are infected. Once in the computer, they replaces all the file
content but the file size doesnt change.
Direct Action Viruses
These viruses mainly replicate or take action once they are executed. When a certain condition
is met, the viruses will act by infecting the files in the directory or the folder specified in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT. The viruses are generally found in the hard disks root directory, but they keep
on changing location.
Directory Virus
Also known as cluster virus or file system virus. They infect the computers directory by
changing the path indicating file location. They are usually located in the disk but affect the
entire directory.
Web Scripting Virus
Most web pages include some complex codes in order to create an interactive and interesting
content. Such a code is often exploited to cause certain undesirable actions. They mostly
originate from the infected web pages or browsers.

4. Negative and Positive effects of viruses

Negative:
Computer Viruses slow down the performance of your computer system. It contains codes that
runs itself and spreads themselves to your whole computer. These codes come in with different
programs and when executed, they slow down your system to an extent that a single operation
might take many minutes to perform. They will also start consuming too much of your
computer's memory, your graphics and sound might not work properly. And, worst is that they
result in data corruption which can make in loosing important data on computers.

Positive:
Only possible positive effects are software companies that can kill viruses are very profitable
and create jobs for bright young people.
