UNIT REFLECTION: POLITICAL

REVOLUTION
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY:
1. In your own words, explain the social contract.

The social contract is basically; citizens giving up a portion of their

rights to the government, in order to maintain balance and peace,
and the government will protect your given rights.
2. Think about the revolution that you researched. How was the social contract
broken in that revolution?
The revolution I researched, was the English Revolution. The contract was
broken when the King brought back old taxes, and used the money for his
own. He was not a good leader, and led the citizens to suffer.
3. What impact did the breaking of the social contract have on the society in your
researched nation?
Eventually, the king was beheaded for treason, and members of the
parliament gained more power. They became a constitutional monarchy
government.
4. At the beginning of the unit we discussed the role of and our relationship with
our government. Does the idea of a social contract actually apply between us
and our government today? Explain your thinking.
Yes, absolutely. For example, the country has a set of laws, and we are to
follow them. However if we break them, we get punishments. However the
government protects our rights, such as freedom of speech.
5. New ideas were a major contributing factor in the revolutions you researched.
What ideas would we consider new (from the last 20 50 years or so) that our
governments are having a tough time dealing with? Ex. Gay marriage.
-Gay Marriage
-Abortion
-Obesity
-Funds
6. Do you think any of these ideas will contribute to the government breaking the
social contract with its citizens? Explain your thinking.

Not really, I mean in some parts of the world, some of those issues are not
really a problem. However, of the top three listed, I feel like it doesnt
really affect anyone else, it is more of a personal issue.

7. In each of the revolutions you researched there came a breaking point. A time
when the people would no longer stand by while their government continued on
doing what they were doing. Do you have a breaking point with our
government? What is that breaking point and why is it a breaking point for you?
A breaking point for me would for there to be no rules that protects the
citizens. For example, if the government allowed people to kill I would
definitely leave the government without question. It is a breaking point
for me, because there is no point in staying within the government, if I do
not feel safe and respected.

8. List at least three questions that you have concerning political revolution in
general or the revolution you researched specifically.
What happened to the kids of the king when he was beheaded?
Why was gay marriage not an issue back in the days?
How did the citizens, parliament got the power to behead the king for
treason?
