My fingers paused over the keyboard for a while, as my thoughts took me back to

my childhood when I started this piece of writing. It reminded me of the days when
Doordarshan was the only channel on our television & Cinema, TV serials (like
'Shaktiman', 'Mahabharata', 'Krishna' & cartoons like 'Duck Tales', 'Superhuman
Samurai', 'Tom & Jerry', 'Micky Mouse' & many more) were the windows to the world
of Entertainment. But they were not just mere objects of entertainment to me. They
had real existence in my fantasy. My imagination used to live in the Disneyland of
Micky Mouse, would fight with Kilvish as Shaktimaan or fly as Superman in the
endless sky. I used to be in hurry to finish off my studies to catch the Friday-night
movies on TV. With me, always joined my brother who is a real film-buff. It used to
be very fruitful way of spending time, when we discussed about every single film
after watching them.
For a long time, my preference was confined to animation & fantasy films . My
favourites were Beauty and the Beast, WALL-E, Toy Story, Grave of the Fireflies,
Waltz with Bashir, Pans Labyrinth& Narnia. Even I started writing a script on my
favourite character, Tintin. The joy of creation ignited inside me the flame to be a
filmmaker. I felt that, children-films have not yet made a strong impact in India.
Perhaps this could be my contribution to the Indian films.
My hands-on experience began with the making of audio-visual short stories written
by my brother. While editing these projects, I found it magical, that some
pictures/footages stitched together in a particular sequence could tell a story. The
story changes completely when I alter their sequence. Miracle happened when my
mind entered the world of Nolanized puzzles viz. Memento, Inception,
Doodlebug. Christopher Nolans non-linear scripting & art of visual story-telling
fascinated me. We started working on our first short film. The result was both
positive and negative. Positive because, now I knew where my passion lies; but the
negative part was that, the film came out to be too amateurish, full of technical
glitches. I realized that, without the knowledge of craft, the artist in me cannot
speak. That day I took the decision of getting into a film school.
I feel that, to be a true filmmaker, I have to be the dreams of a writer & the paints of
a painter; every day, every moment I am living those dreams but dont know yet,
how to colour them. I am sure, only a film school can make my dream true.
