Haiti: Summary

Hours of glory and times of shame.

November 18, 1803: magical and memorable day.

November 18, 1803: Vertières! Victory colossal and unprecedented.

November 18, 1803: End of the War of Independence won, symbolizing the
triumph of freedom and equality of human races.

In the annals of the history of our beautiful country, this date is particularly
important given its great significance. Blacks and mulattos / slaves and freedmen,
mostly devoid of culture, have managed to capitulate l French army at the time,
instrument for the maintenance of slavery in defiance of the ideals of justice and
liberty that guided the world of ideas in the eighteenth century in Europe and,
eventually, would be engraved in the Declaration Rights of Man and Citizen of
1789.

The freed slaves / blacks and mulattoes of Santo Domingo have understood the
urgent need for the sacred union around Dessalines to combat, by the dialectic of
weapons-weapons of dialectics has not given Toussaint result with the slave system
and perpetuated racist contempt for human rights already recognized in Europe and
making a loud echo in France.

Indeed, the final victory snatched November 18, 1803 was not only that blacks and
mulattos of Saint-Domingue against white settlers, but more importantly, the
victory of human rights on oppression, exploitation and racism. Our forefathers
wanted and managed to instill in others-or perhaps remember - that "men are born
and remain free and equal in rights."

So, when that great day in our history of people and that of humanity, Rochambeau,
after his capitulation, was forced to deliver the Cape to Dessalines, mankind has
made a very significant conquest rights man.

Dessalines and his top staff have understood the immense scope of the victory that
has been torn. This explains their decision to take their time and celebrate the
proclamation of independence on 1 January 1804. They have also given back to
Santo Domingo's Indian name "Haiti" because the name of Santo Domingo recalls
the colonial and slavery they fought with all their might.
If the Europeans have called the eighteenth century "Enlightenment", 1 January 1804,
cons, was the day of the celebration of the victory of light over darkness. In sum,
this was a moment of glory in our history of people and a milestone in the history
of mankind.

On 1 January 1804, we, Haitians, have boldly set the tone. For years, we were not
very loved because of it. However, others would eventually follow suit. Thus John
Locke of England abolished slavery in 1833, the France of Voltaire and Rousseau
was abolished in 1848, the United States of America which Congress declares
independence since 04 july 1776 abolished slavery at home in 1865. Moreover, it
was not until 1948 that the international community would condemn slavery in the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Later, the Convention of 07 September
1956, concluded at the initiative of the Economic and Social Council of the United
Nations would condemn slavery more seriously.

Taking into account all the above, you will understand, the slave trade that was
already appalling and unacceptable in the eyes of our Forefathers, however, was a
lawful activity and even a state institution. Moreover, its erection in breach
international took time and was difficult.

However, we fought long ago. We fought for ourselves, but we also helped other
people to fight. Because we have always believed in the principle of sovereign
equality of States, the right of peoples to self-determination and equality of human
races. With this in mind how fortunate that the Emperor Jacques 1 hosted and
provided support to the Venezuelan officer Miranda who wanted to liberate his
country from Spanish occupation. Since it failed later Petion helped the Venezuelan
Simon Bolivar to liberate his country from Spanish occupation. Petion gave him
not only advice but also material support. In addition, 400 Haitian volunteers who
had naturally not afraid to fight against slavery had escorted to its
destination. Thus, Bolivar could he declare the independence of Venezuela,
Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. In the sense that President Petion is also
revered in Latin America as the Father Pan-Americanism and his statue is standing
proudly in Caracas.

The story says that thanks Petion, Bolivar said: "Do I know for posterity Alexandre
Petion is the Liberator of my country?" - Do nothing, "replied Petion. All I demand
is the abolition of slavery. Promise me only to free slaves wherever your troops will
be victorious ...

Some might exclaim: But how big?

Whereas until the second half of the twentieth century, the

American black pastor Martin Luther King and the American
politician Malcolm X struggled to pay the price with their
blood for the integration of blacks in American society
American;

While Nazi Germany is lost in the indecency and absurdity

with the most abject apology for his racism and his most
unspeakable cruelties in the concentration camps;

As the French writer and diplomat, wrote Gobineau's racist

theories in his "Essay on the Inequality of Human
Races," which theses have also served as a reference for
scholars of Germanic racism;

One of our beautiful water of intellectuals, namely Antenor

Firmin, gave the reply by publishing his work entitled: From
equality of human races.

So it goes without saying that we have always argued and fought for racial equality
and human rights and inalienable to every human being regardless of particular
religion, of race or sex. Thus, the assumption of Barack Obama in the White
House, should we see the realization of the American dream and the culmination of
the struggle against racism led by slaves in the French colony of Santo Domingo?

In any case, we were present in Paris December 10, 1948 for the adoption of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It will not forget to pass the symbolic role
played by the Haitian intellectual real value Emile St-Lot as rapporteur of the
Committee to the General Assembly.

Furthermore, to consolidate the independence won with the blood our ancestors
have built forts whose ruins testify, even today, the Haitian genius. Nor can we
forget the Palace with 365 doors, the Palace of Sans-Souci and the Citadelle
Laferrière wonderful. Do we not say, moreover, the latter being one of the few
wonders of the world? It is the symbol of the imagination, pride and resilience of
the Haitian.

In addition, we are the first in the area to be electrified and to have railways.

In fact, all to remember that we've had moments of glory in our history of people
and we should be proud. However, our history of people is equally marked by the
facts that we should be very proud. We know because we do not do the ostrich.

Indeed, beside these beautiful pages of our history, our elites have spent all their
time fighting power after independence. The political spectrum has always been
paved with beautiful heads. Some fail while others succeed in their quest for power
as an end in itself, because the best interests of the nation were almost always the
least of their worries.

-The first blow was the assassination of Emperor Jacques 1, Founding Father of the
Nation. The sacred union of blacks and mulattos who made possible November 18,
1803 at Vertières could not be sustainable. Interests of different clans and many
would soon take precedence over the general interest. Unfortunately, since this
unfortunate situation is a historical constant. We always unite to fight, but never
built.

"Only six (6) years after independence, the country is already divided into three (3)
states:

Petion in the West

Christophe in the North

Rigaud in the South.

-Furthermore, the excessive thirst of power elites still caused by the result of other
divisions of the country.

"We have bought the recognition of our independence from France in the
Boyer. Moreover, Haitians will never forget the incident as Geffrard Rubalcava, in
the case Basch Nissage Saget or in the case Lüders Tiresias Simon Sam

-From 1870 to 1883, two political parties dominated the political scene in Haiti: the
National Party and the Liberal Party. Each of them had its own motto and
priority. Given the level of education and outreach to supporters of these parties,
the people were entitled to expect a modernization of political life in
Haiti. However, the elites never agree to lead the country safely. The large caliber
intellectuals who constituted the board of these parties have preferred polarize the
country with their ideology. However, education and civic education of the masses
to understand the meaning of the vote would easily permit the exercise of political
power goes to the most capable for the greater good of the greatest number.

Unfortunately, this polarization has caused bloodshed and civil war in the
country. Is this the case in mind always that we channel our energies to fight and
not to build? In any case, since after independence, our quarrels chapel have always
been successful on the best interests of the nation.

-Besides, with the pegs in the South and Cacos in the North, the country was again
the scene of multiple civil wars. Is that our elites have almost always neglected our
gallant farmers who are also supposed to be "outside", so outside the priorities of
the ruling elites. Perhaps one of the causes for which effective decentralization has
never been triggered.

It seems that our leaders feed the implacable hatred against each other until they
can not agree on minimum subsistence which would be the best interests of the
nation.

-As a result, we continued our fratricidal struggles to blow July 28, 1915: the
disappointment most demeaning. U.S. Marines under the command of President
Woodrow Wilson, treading the ground to take the national reins This "little
ungovernable chaotic entity.

History has certainly retained the name of Charlemagne Peralta, one of Benoit
Batraville and cons occupation group called "patriotic union" chaired by George
Sylvain. However, we were both unfortunate to note that under the U.S.
occupation, the Presidents Dartiguenave Borno and Vincent have completed their
terms. While a total of 26 heads of state, Dessalines Vilbrun Guillaume Sam, only 2
were able to complete their mandate.

-In 1937, under the chairmanship of Vincent, thousands of Haitians were murdered
in the Haitian-Dominican border on the orders of Dominican dictator Rafael
Trujillo proved before being himself later assassinated by his own countrymen. The
climax was the acceptance of a cursed Vincent compensation. At that time, national
pride and collective consciousness took a further blow.

However, the Republic of Haiti and the Dominican Republic are two independent
states sharing the same island. Despite this proximity, nationals of these two states,
constantly feeding still contentious historical towards each other, behave like
brothers enemies. Moreover, socio-economic or political, the imbalance is evident
between these two states and the status quo does not inflame the permanent state of
tension prevailing on the island.

This imbalance also explains the massive movement of Haitian nationals to the
Dominican Republic in hopes of finding a supposed better life. However, the living
conditions of Haitian migrant workers are poor. They are helping to grow the
Dominican economy and parallel working conditions are subhuman at least, apart
from the beheadings, executions and discriminatory attitudes which they are
regularly subjected. All this is explained by the reasons mentioned above but also
and especially by the laxity of our ruling elites.

-Finally, we can not be proud of such situations. Especially as we seem to have

missed successively 1946, 1957, 1986 and 1990. More over, we do not deeply
humiliated in 1994 and 2004?
Finally, repeat for the other: "We took power with the masses but it runs with the
enlightened elite of the people." Consequently, the elites who are supposed to be
the guide of the people must stop him to miss the great rendezvous of history. But
to succeed, they must first come together, to recognize and agree on minimum
subsistence which is nothing but the best interests of the nation. They must finally
prevail over the arguments of the group or class. The elites have a duty of
responsibility towards themselves, towards the country and to future
generations. Consequently, there is need for a rally to build. And we, youth, the
lifeblood of the country, this is our concern and the future is ours!
