SUMMARY OF SUPPORTING ARTICLE

Abstract
The following is a summary of the article Professional Development Plan by Marcia Beckett
from her blog, Art is Basic. The article details her plan to improve her ability as an instructor and
create artistic curriculum that benefits the students outside of artistic bounds. It also suffices in
providing a supporting example for accomplishing TPE 6, or Domain F: Professional Growth,
along with its subsequent TPEs.

SUMMARY OF SUPPORTING ARTICLE

California Teacher Expectation #6, or Domain F, outlines what our efforts should be in
order to grow and develop as professionals. More specifically, TPE 13: Professional Growth
(2013) states Candidates evaluate their own teaching practices and subject matter knowledge in
light of information about the state-adopted academic content standards for students and student
learning (Page 17.) The key, for me, within that statement was evaluate their own teaching
practices. In doing so, I need to ensure that I am continually seeking outside sources for new
information and ideas to improve my own practice. Marcia Beckett from Art is Basic provides a
brief roadmap for developing as an artistic professional, making it ideal literature in supporting
Domain F.
Marcia Beckett is a K-6 Art teacher in Madison, Wisconsin. She established the website
Art is Basic to share ideas and promote learning within the educator community. Within this
article, she has shared her Professional Development Plan (PDP) with her audience. This serves a
dual purpose as both a means for growth, but also an example of an extended plan, in which we
are tasked with creating for this weeks assignment. Beckett (2012) states, When I was trying to
write mine (PDP,) I wanted to look up examples from other art teachers and I really couldn't find
any sample plans that were specifically for art teachers. Maybe this will help someone else out
when you are writing a professional growth plan. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed.
Beckett outlines the rationale for her plan goals, mostly pertaining to the incorporation of
other subject matters into art, such as tying Egyptian Social Studies with Egyptian Art. With my
professional goal, I will weave together a curriculum that combines both interdisciplinary
concepts and fundamental art skills (Beckett, 2012.) It is clear that her growth as a professional
will seek to establish an artistic curriculum that improves the students ability both in and outside

of the art classroom. To focus her efforts, Beckett established four objectives: deepening her
understanding of art strategies, focusing on core and interdisciplinary skills, implement
sequential curriculum, and expand on personal skills.
Marcia Becketts PDP is an outstanding effort, and serves as a capable guide for any art
instructors seeking to create, implement, or add to an existing plan. TPE 13 (2013) also states
that educators should improve their teaching practices by soliciting feedback and engaging in
cycles of planning, teaching, reflecting, discerning problems, and applying new strategies (Page
17.) Becketts work allows me to effectively achieve this expectation, and will undoubtedly be a
resource I return to in the future when seeking further ideas and curriculum diversity.
