3.1 Students will demonstrate an understanding and


appreciation of how geographic, social, cultural and linguistic
factors affect quality of life in communities in India, Tunisia,
Ukraine and Peru.
3.1.2 Students will: examine the social, cultural and linguistic
characteristics that affect quality of life in communities in
other parts of the world by exploring and reflecting upon the
following questions for inquiry:
What are the traditions, celebrations, stories and
practices in the communities that connect the people
to the past and to each other (e.g., language spoken,
traditions, customs)
Students will:
Demonstrate appreciation of the Spanish language,
and the influence of language on culture in Peru by
Using basic Spanish to introduce and express simple
ideas about themselves to others
Listening to others introduce themselves in basic
Spanish.
About me cards: Students will be able to write three
basic things about themselves in Spanish.
Students will record three basic facts about two other
students.

Acknowledge the importance of language in culture,
and in general communication with others.
Show linguistic differences by introducing simple
Spanish pronunciations (Have students repeat after
you.)

Tell them that we are going to pretend we are in Peru, and


were all going to play a get to know you game-in Spanish.
Teach them basic Spanish greetings, with English equivalents
(On their sheet, and on the whiteboard):
Hola!
Cmo te llamas?
Cal es t color favorito?
Qu te gusta hacer? (2 minutes-students repeat
afterwards)
Let them cut out and fill out the about me sheets (4
minutes)
Let them find two other people (walk around while playing
music and whoever they are closest to is their partner) and
write down their name, favorite color, and what they like to
do (back of worksheet). (4 minutes)
Discuss the difficulty of speaking in another language, and
how knowing more than one language can help you to
understand other people and appreciate their cultures, as
well as to share your own. Bilingual ability can play a major
part in being a global citizen.
