Video recording act

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_nasty
The video recording act demands that any physical form of video
recording like DVDs, have to be classified by the BBFC (The British Board
of film Classification). Before the creation of the BBFC, people were able to
produce their own videos and sell them outside of the BBFC and with them
not being classified. The British Board of film was put in place to prevent
an audience from seeing any harmful or hurtful messages and making
sure that actually the film industry remains positive. The BBFC
categorises every film to make sure the film s suitable for its audience.
The video recording act was created to destroy of video nasties; For
example they seized the Dolly Partons music, The Best Little Whorehouse
in Texas due to the belief that it was pornographic.
Copyright law
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright
http://realbusiness.co.uk/article/27412-6-famous-copyright-cases
Copyright law is a very important aspect of the film industry as it protects
companys works. They protect the original workings of an artist, it allows
only the original creator the power to change or use the recording, written
pieces anything. Copy right is put in place to help all different kinds of
work from being forged by other people, that was the reason it was first
brought out in 1662. It works in the fact that you cannot take someone
work, because that would mean that you would be stealing their work but
it does not cover ideas or information. If you took similar idea to
something but then still created it to be individual that would not be
against copy right law. For example if you wanted to create something
similar to marvel, you could do something similar but the characters,
storyline and name would have to be different to avoid crossing the
copyright laws. I feel art points that the copy right law can hinder the film
industry in some ways, for example documentary films may entail
previous footage, so films may cost more due to this, and the time of
creation may be extended by the process that they would have to follow
to use that footage.
Those who break the copy right law, you would first receive a letter from
the artist/creator to stop using their work, if you dont take down the work
then you could face penalties and possibly jail time.
Starwars and Battlestar Galactica was a large case within the media
industry for copyright breaching, the makers of Battlestar Galactica were
accused of copying too much from Starwars. Just after the success of
starwars, Battlestar galectica came out and it was at this time when it
showed how much they had taken from the hit starwars, for example the
title being Star Worlds, and similar characters names. The case was

settled 2 years later in favour of BattleStar Galattica, but unfortunately

the original movie was cancelled from cinemas.

The Film Act 1927

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinematograph_Films_Act_1927

The 1927 film act, was introduced to classify what was seen as a British
film and what wasnt, theses were just some of the standards they had put
in place. If the movie did not meet theses they would not be considered as
a British movie.
-The film must be made by a British or British controlled company
-Studio scenes must be photographed within a film studio in the British
Empire/Commonwealth
-The author of the scenario or the original work the screenplay was based
on must be a British -Subject
-At least 75% of the salaries must be paid to British Subjects excluding the
costs of two persons at least one of which must be an actor
This act meant that every cinema had to show a percentage of British
made films every ten years. This was believed to help create a vertical
integrated film industry. The percentages were initially at 7.5%, and then
slowly rose to 20% in 1935. This act was generally considered as
unsuccessful, due to the fact that there was speculation of increase in
budget on films. Thought it did have some good, in the it promoted more
British made films, and made Hollywood films less dominant within Britain,
which I feel lead to the countries now dominance within the whole film
industry.

Important of ethical issues

Equal opportunities/encouraging diversity
http://www.bbfc.co.uk/about-bbfc/work-us/equal-opportunities
http://www.bfi.org.uk/film-industry
http://www.bfi.org.uk/about-bfi/policy-strategy/film-forever/researchdiversity
It important to maintain equal opportunities within film industry as it is
inclusive of everyone and none is left out, due to certain issues. The BBFC
(The British Board of classification is largely in favour of creating equal

opportunities within the film industry, so they wish to include people

regardless of the individuals gender, sexuality, colour, race, disability
Everybody is equal and intituled to them same opportunities. The only
issue is that. This applies to all matter of employment like pay, sick pay,
and training. They make sure that no job applicants discriminated towards
due to requirements or conditions. Another thing that the BBFC do is that
they ensure that there is employees that can speak a large amount of
language which means that communities can be inclusive of those who
dont speak a certain language, these employees may also understand
the cultures and to have the understanding of their educational
requirements. To have someone like this in a work environment, can make
it feel more welcoming as well as creating equal opportunities for those
who are qualified but not necessarily fluent in the language use at the
media company. Within film companies there would be a head of
personnel to keep track that everyone, workers and applicants, are being
treated correctly and with equal opportunities.
The British Film institute has the same view on equal opportunities, and it
tries to make sure that there is a diverse workforce within the film
industry, and this applies to everyone from every dimension of the film
industry. They wish to include a large of diverse talent for on and off the
camera, they overall just want to integrate a larger, more equal and
diverse employment across the whole of the film industry.
Use of language
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Board_of_Film_Classification
Careful with language used due to certificate given of the film itself. So for
example you would not use strong language within a movie that was there
for family entertainment. The British board of film classification, makes
sure than every movie is suitable for audiences this would prevent them
from that of swearing, possible scenes displaying explicit goings on. The
BBFC prevents this, as the certificate every movie, so certificating each
movie prevents a certain audience from watching a certain movie. For
example another hood is certificate 18, this prevents a younger audience
from hearing the provocative and rude language used by the characters
within the movie. I think having swear within films are a lot more common
as well as the fact that it is more accepted, due to movies generally
mimicking real life.
As well as what languages the films are bought out in, as the more
languages in which the films are brought out in creates a wider and more
diverse audience, this then allows the company with a larger income, so
as a result an increasing income and reception for that company.
Representation of gender
https://www.nyfa.edu/film-school-blog/gender-inequality-in-film/

Within this website it displays the percentages of how men and women
are portrayed throughout the film industry. This doesnt just mean those
working on or in films this can also apply to that of the awards offered,
pay checks, and actual position of the women within the industry. Firstly in
comparison to men 28% of women are seen in provocative clothing, this
shows the large sex appeal towards women, but only 7% of men within
the film industry are posed in provocative way. Another example with
would be that actually there are more male actors in comparison to
women; the ratio is 2.25:1. With only these two examples displays that
there is a large different representation of both men and women. This
demonstrates that actually women are represented it a rather negative
way especially within this industry, that when on scene women are
portrayed as sex objects and then behind scenes their work is not
appreciated, especially in comparison to the males within the industry.
http://griid.org/2013/02/12/normalizing-male-dominance-genderrepresentation-in-2012-films/
I think that actually women are seen as more inferior to men, even though
they are equalling out across all fields. But its still apparent that actually
thats not the case within the film industry, an example is the pay
difference between those working within the film industry, so actors and
actress have a large difference in pay for example Angelina was the
highest paid actress of 2013 earning $33 million and the highest actor
Was Robert Downey Jr was the highest paid actor with a staggering $75
million dollars. I feel this is one of the biggest examples that shows that
men and women within this industry are displayed as being unequal.
Within films themselves there is a large difference, like the directors, there
are both a mix of both female and male, but throughout award
ceremonies there is definitely a difference between awards given to that
of females and male for example from 1975 there as only ever been 4
women winning awards for the best film maker, which shows an
immediate bias towards men.
Representation of religious beliefs
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/religiousfilms.html
http://presstv.com/Detail/2015/05/10/410335/Hollywoodmisrepresentation-religion
Representation of religion is rather important, it similar to that of gender
than actually its an important thing to be inclusive of and not judge by. I
think that this website shows that many films have been inclusive of many
different religious beliefs and practises. It shows a large variety, and it
shows that the film industry is inclusive of other religions and
demonstrates that. Another example is that films cannot be racially or
religiously abusive towards cultures or people. This is one to not upset an
audience or offend anyone. An example of representation of religious,

would be that of Bruce Almightly this film is based on guy and his
connection with god and that he gets given powers to do things, by he has
to use them for good and to help people. This could be seen as a
misrepresentation to some people, because to them maybe god doesnt
act that way or be effected by the way the movie represented god.
How should men and women be represented?
Men and women should be treated as equal within this business, and
within all businesss. Meanwhile, this industry is very different its
somewhere people can have overall creative impute; I think this can
prevent people from being equal, as stereotypically women as based in
certain roles especially on screen, women as based as mothers, lover or in
a sexual position within a movie. Men and women should ultimately be
viewed as equal, but as talked about earlier, 28% of women have been
seen in a sexual provocative clothing where as for men its increasing
lower at 7% of men.
Does your studio represent people fairly in their films?
http://www.vastpublicindifference.com/2008/06/pixars-genderproblem.html
I think that there as been issues in the past that shows that Pixar as an
issue with gender through out their movies, and they havent represented
females well within their movies. For example Toy Story, the main
characters were men as well as the fact that all women within the movie,
Andys mum, and Mrs. Potato Head were all irrelevant, and not large parts
of whole movies. Finding Nemo another on of their films, shows a father,
son with no mother, and then the many characters Dory is shown as
slightly dippy and forgetful, so misrepresenting women.
